Picked this HJ up on ebay

Looks to be a Poet, with the 5 sided crest as seen in the Lucas Warehouse video. Wide 3 inch brim, 2 inch ribbon. I will leave "as is" as I always wanted a uncut older Poet with the wide ribbon, to add to my collection. I look forward to receiving it so I can eyeball it really well. Fedora

That's an interesting looking HJ. Did they give you an idea of when it was made?

No, and Dakota was trying to figure it out as well. I don't know if he ever came up with the answer. He keeps up with when HJ moved from one address to another, but I think this one here puzzled him on the ballpark dating. Since it has the pentagon crest, I would guess it to me made between Raiders and TLC. I bought it only to have a hat with the crest that we know was in the films, and the one that preceded the Borsalino looking oval crest. We see this pentagon in the Donavan office scene in TLC if I recall correctly. Not a Raiders fedora, but probably the hat used to make TLC hat, although I think this is one of the lighter browns HJ offered back then. I don't think this one is the sable color. Fedora

What a cool find Steve ! That's one for the ol archive. What size is it? It looks a little small.

The hat arrived here yesterday, and I just finally got the time this morning to check it out. So, I opened the box and styrofoam peanuts spilled out everywhere. I know those things help, but boy do I hate them!! Anyways, I pull the hat out and it looks decent. Size is 7 1/8, brim 2 7/8 all the way around, ribbon is 1 3/4, and of course it has the old pentagon HJ Crest, which is the only reason that I bought it to begin with. The felt is very soft on the crown, and very simliar to what the new HJ felt is if you get it with no stiffener like Indy and Todd. This may have started out as a Poet, but there has been shrinkage on the crown over the years and it is hard to tell what the original blockshape really was. Here's the kicker, and one reason that I bought it. The color. It was listed as brown on ebay, but it is a gray hat with a brownish tinge, or a brown hat with a grayish tinge. Take your pic, but I am convinced this is the exact color of the hat in Raiders that we have argued about the color for years. It has more of a brownish undertone than my own gray felt that I thought was close. But is is still a gray hat, and I can see how some have been confused on it being brown. Especially if you saw it only on film. I now have an example of the last remaining crest that I did not own from the HJ line, and I have the color I was always really curious about. I will pack it up in moth balls and take it to my rental storage building and it will be in good company with my other vintage hats and HJs.Fedora

Thats awesome Steve ! You should at least take some outside pictures of it in the sunlight so we can see the true color before you mothball it !

great....now we have a new arguement.....was it a brown hat with a greyish tint or a grey hat with a brown tint

steve, i recall that the hat was not my size....perhaps they gave a measurement less than 22.5 inches on the advertisement which is why i assumed it was a size 7.

look'n forward to some pics of her :D

 Wow that would explain a great many things about the color of the travel hat. In fact when I first saw the picture above I thought that the hat was a light brown. What a differance some shading makes.

The bashes look very even.. do you think were hand done, or maybe made on a block with bashes? ............... By the way, do Poets actually say Poet in them somewhere? I get the impression that this hat doesn't say Poet anywhere?

One of the Poets in my collection, from 1990, has the word Poet stamped in gold leaf on the sweatband. On another Poet that I bought in 1993, Mr. Swales replaced "Poet" with my initials. I've also owned a few others, and none of those have any identification at all.
