I just finished a 9 foot bullwhip.
This whip is about 1/2 inch shy of 9 feet, so I'm calling it a 9 footer. To see more pics go to my blog at
http://bullwhips.org. On my blog there are pic's before I shellac'd it and it's amazing what a coat of shellac will do!!!

Looks great, how long is the handle? Knot to knot.

From the top of the top knot to the bottom of the butt of the handle it's 7 inches. Or there is about 4 inches of checkerboard plaiting between the knots.
For some reason I like the look of the shorter handle over the handle being the full length of the handle foundation. However if I could redo this whip on thing I would do is make the handle a smidge thinner.

Fantastic whip. I really like the handle like that actually.
I've got one of Louie's whips and I love it, a real pleasure to handle

very nice work louie. pardon my ignorance, but when making the darker strip at the top of the handle, do you die it or use a different colour hide altogether?

The transition knot is from a hide of a different color...I had some extra kicking around that I had already cut...so I figured why not use it.

Lookin' good Louie,
. Now, just a guess, but the way the thong tapers, I'm thinkin' it's a beefy whip. What I mean is, it looks a good med-heavy whip, which I like, btw. Nice job!

steve,
Yes, it's a beefy whip!!! Normally I don't like my whips this heavy, but I ended using a thick hide for the bellies and a thick-ish hide for the bolsters.
I was smitten by a thick roo hide that I got...in the future the next time a thick kangaroo hops into my life I'm going to use a thinner hide for the bellies.
