this textile business is difficult!!!
first attempt: olive mess. OLIVE! i followed dalexis recipe, figured for about 12 gal. well, that was my first mistake. my washer does NOT use anywhere CLOSE to 12 gals H2O on small setting.
so, RIT color remover and bleach and i'm back for round 2...

Good luck I tried it with that exact same shirt 2 weeks ago and it didn't work. For some reason the stitching wouldn't release it's color. So I ended up owning a yellow shirt with olive stitching.
I threw it away...

Why were you dying the shirt Olive as opposed to Tan?
Just curious.

The shirt was originally colored olive, rit-dye color remover was used to remove the color. The problem with mine is that the remover got the shirt cleaned out of dye, it just couldn't remove the dye from the stitching.

Well, good luck and I hope the shirt turns out fine

Ah, okay, thanks for the clarification. I've seen those OD shirts at Target as well, but I'm going to try and order a couple of the tan ones from the target.com web site.

FYI I pm'd at least one of you guys regarding the possible polyester blend of the stitching and the possible outcome.
It it were me, I'd boil the snot out of it in rit remover.
I know the process works on LLBean shirts which use a Olive based for the color.
(Trust me on this one...)

You should really get inthe habit of photographing even your mistakes.
A) Its fun to see how messed up it can get...
B) It's helpful. (Thats how my tutorial got its start.)

This is the only one I have left. It was an original LLBean Tan, which some may remember was much darker then it should have been.
Notice that the buttons are the only thing that stayed darker.
These shirts are next to impossible to work with.
In the remover bath.................................................................and 5 or 6 baths later

Doesnt boiling the shirt shrink the crud out of it ?

You dont' boil it, you simmer it. And yes in some cases, the shrink may shrink a bit, depending on how long you let it cook.
This shirt was an extra large, so I had some room to play with.
Only the sleeves are a bit short, but then I almost always have them rolled up anyways.

Isn't that LL Bean shirt the one that comes with the built-in insect repellant? I know mine was. I decided not to do any color changing on mine until I was sure that the insect repellant was no longer working. Not that I've seen proof that it actually works to begin with...

No, this was pre insect repellant or whatever they put in it!
Just a nice comfortable, but tough, cotton shirt.
