I just wanted to share a quick video I shot of Chris Camp cracking his 25 foot whip this weekend. I would have had more video but my camera batteries died. It is one heck of a whip! If you ever get the chance to meet Chris, have a look at it. Joe Strain did a wonderful job with it.

And thanks to Chris, Dan, Nick, and Gery for a great weekend!

Man, that thing is so long that if I cracked it, I would forget that I cracked it, and it would scare me death when it finally cracked.

. . . cool . . . no wonder you guys are so far from the camera, any closer the whip wouldn't fit in the shot.

Great clip (also loved the cow mooing). My question - why such a big whip?

Great video Paul !
I guess if you do not mind carrying it around! I have trouble with the 12 footer I am using. I am looking to get an 8.

That size would be for more of an"exhibition" whip and not one you would carry around Im a thinkin......

Yes. And what an exhibition it makes. Great to see the video and knowing how hard some of these longer whips are to use makes it all the more impressive. Would you get a larger crack out of a whip like that?

Yes, bigger crack out of it and the whip is usable to people highly experienced in whipcracking. Chris is able to cut targets using that whip.

Chris said that every time he did shows at a fair or a big event, the old timers would come up to him and regail him with stories of seeing a Wild West performer take an apple off the top of someones head with a 20+ foot whip, so he said, "Hey! Why not?" and called up Joe Strain.
I think Joe was just so curious to see if he could do a 24 foot Kangaroo Hide bullwhip in his typical Indy style that he took on the challenge. He'd done some "stunt whips" for movies in that length before where he braided an overlay over a steel cable, (for attaching to harnesses and swinging,) but NEVER a full braided belly whip like that.
And a beautiful whip it is. You stretch it all the way out and look down the length. The seam is straight as an arrow, and the taper is a nice constant.
Chris uses it for wraps as well as targeting. I asked if he threw the whip, then went to lunch, balanced his checkbook, took in a movie, and THEN came back in time for the whip to crack and take his bow.
It was really funny to watch Paul try to do a "Sidearm/Overhead" combo with the thing. The sidearm he got, but the overhead failed miserably. I wish I'd had a camera for the attempt at this where he shouted back at us, "Hey, does this look as lame as it feels?"
Yes...Yes it does.
But, in his defence, he got it to crack. All I got was a big red streak on the back of my neck, (which is STILL there, but healing nicely...) I think I'll stick with sixers and eights... ;-)
