Shameful eBay auction...

I know that it is taboo to post links to eBay auctions, and I won't do it. Just wanted to air a grievance. I did a search on eBay for Indiana Jones hats, and came across a guy selling an admittedly wool felt Indy hat (probably the DP), but he's got the pic of the Raiders Herbert Johnson from Todd's site.

That's not cool
I hope the guy who buys it doesn't pay him...ok maybe not because that is illegal, but I hope it doesnt sell with a scammer like that

He's already got a couple of folks bidding on it. I wish there were some way to warn them. Not that the Dorfman Pacific is a bad hat, but when you think that you're getting something that looks like an HJ, the DP may be a bit of a disappointment. Then again, they may not even notice, depending on how serious they are.

Be sure to send Puppetboy a PM with a link to that auction. He'll definitely be interested in knowing about someone stealing his photograph from his site.

There is a way to warn the bidders, provided it's not a private auction. Just click on the bidder's username to go to his/her profile, and then use the "contact member" feature. I've enjoyed following this forum for a couple of years and haven't posted many messages, but I don't like to see people get ripped off.

eBay has changed the way it does business. They don't LIST names anymore. You're listed as 'bidder 1'....bidder2....and so forth.
The private auctions don't list anything at all now.

I sent a message to each bidder, giving them a rundown of the HJ that was pictured, and informing them of what they were probably bidding on. I didn't instruct them not to bid, just gave them the facts. I also gave them a link to the Indygear site and forum in case they would like more info.

Todd can get the auction shut down. there is a guy that sells ranfinder cameras on the bay and people steal his pictures all the time.
HIS problem is EBAY has taken some of his pictures and listed them as STOCK, so the auction person was not responsible. [doubt this is the case here]
time to ask the guy if it is a picture of the hat for sale

you can also report a violation to e-bay in regards to the item. i was going to do that but i thought i'd let todd do the honors if he is out there.
i don't know why he would use a herbie j to represent a dp. i'm relieved that captain ron thew all of the bidders an e-mail but i think that this auction should be shutdown as the product is being misrepresented visually.

I am glad. I hate people who try to trick unsuspecting bidders. Thank you for your persistance for justice- ok maybe not the best wording; it sounded like something someone would say to Batman or Superman.
Good work

I'm going to play devil's advocate (just because I like to).
It is possible that the seller just didn't want to take his own picture. Since he had an official "Indiana Jones hat," he may have Googled just that. The picture he used from Todd's is on the first page of image results and, understandably, looks the best.
Not to say that he wasn't wrong to use it. I'm just saying it may not have been his intention to mislead the bidders.

Mark Brody,
I see your point. It is possible. Even if he had used an image of a Dorfman Pacific that he found on Google, it is still not his own. I'm definitely not advocating that he should be sued for copywright infringement. It could have been an innocent mistake. However, he is an established eBay vendor, and as such should know better. My main purpose was to keep some unsuspecting bidder from paying $100 or more for a DP, thinking he was getting a HJ quality hat. Perhaps, I should leave it to the bidders to do they're own research.
Caveat emptor, right?
On a side note, I looked at the other items that he sells, and he appears to specialize almost entirely in fragrances.

I asked him if that was the hat, se said NO, but it is EXACTLY the same....

Wool vs. Fur. Yeah, that's the same.
Thanks for asking, Dostacos.

In all reality, there is huge differences between the HJ and the Dorfman- HUGE differences! I am just glad that the auction was "handled" properly
Thanks everyone! That unsuspecting bidder might have been me out there a couple of months ago

Perhaps I should own up to my own practices of photo piracy before some shrewd CoW'er calls me out for being a hypocrite.
The images that I posted in the Cairo Bazaar for the glasses that I'm selling are those from the eBay auction on which I bought them. However, they are the same glasses, and as I did buy them from the vendor, I'd like to think that I at least share ownership of the images.
Plus, they are better quality images that I could have gotten with my camera. But, it's not like I pirated an image of the Berkshire Chase frames to sell my own.

confuse me but aren't there TWO dorfmans?
a $40 one [wool] and a $100 one [fur felt] both with the INDY pin
:
:
so that could be close to a $200 swing I think I will stick with a vendor from here

Yeah, there are at least two that I know of. You've got it about right.

Yes- two Dorfmans. Both are officially liscensed products and come with the Indy pin. I was going to get one, but I found a cheaper deal at my local dry good store

i thought there were lots of dp's ranging from crushable wool to different colours/materials, canvas looking ones, etc.....
don't they have lots of styles for the officially licenced indy fedora?

Thanks for the heads up, all, esp Capt Solo. The guy said he got the photo from the wonderful reservoir of free photos known as "Google images". People use my images all the time, and I ususally don't care, as long as they aren't trying to scam someone. If he were selling an HJ Poet, I wouldn't have really minded. Slightly annoyed, maybe, but I wouldn't have tried to shut the auction down.

One of the bidders on that auction wrote me back, asking me what the hat actually looked like. I told him what he would be bidding on, and what the image was of. I also told him that if the vendor decides to re-run the auction, and he wanted to bid on it, to feel free; however, I advised him not to bid more that $30-$40. I had given the bidders a link to this site. Hopefully he will check it out.

They have many many styles.

Not listed anymore was DP's Velt Indiana Jones hat for children, or the official Indiana Jones Pith helmet. Also other hatters have entered the Indiana Jones hat collections at Disneyland. Though not official, they are sold next to and advertised as Indiana Jones hats.

Disneyland sells a Tilley as an Indiana Jones hat?

Not officially, but yes they are in the Indiana Jones outpost and the cast members will try to convince you they are Indiana Jones hats. I'm not sure if they are Tilley's but they look exactly the same. Except the price is double.
If I can remember correctly Tilley has rights to those style of hats, but I don't want to confirm anything.

It seems to me that everytime somebody at Dorfman sneezes, there's another variation or change in their Indy hats. I have had first-hand encounters with several, and seen a few others on the net. It just cracks me up to see some of what they'll slap Indy's name on in order to sell it! I think this is one of the reasons I stray away from even the high-end DP's. I mean, I might not even get an actual DP! I think just about every fedora or outback hat that DP has been allowed to put their name on has been - or will be - marketed as an Indy hat for at least one batch.
They do make nice canvas hats though.

It's the only reason I haven't purchased a DP off of the internet. I really need to inspect the quality of felt and the construction of the hat. Overall you can't go wrong with there cloth/canvas hats (Their Indy Khaki Canvas is by far my favorite canvas hat), but the felt hats change in material and construction all the time, from leather sweatbands to cloth and even polyester sweatbands.
My momma always said, "Dorfman Pacific Hats were like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
