You guys that have (or have had) Fuller's on your stuff - how exactly do you apply it? I'm especially interested in people who do the jacket, and maybe even things other than the hat. Of course if you dust your hat, you're included in this thread too.

I'm looking for tips and tricks on applying Fuller's to your gear to make it look realistic, not overdone, and not cheesy. Also include information on how you remove it, please... I know the Fuller's kind of sticks to the auth. lamb.

Do you guys put Fuller's on your Aldens? Fuller's on your knees? Fuller's on your bag strap?

Shane, here's my advice. Get dressed up in all your gear, climb on top of a big dirt mound, and roll yourself down it. Can't help you with Fuller's Earth, though.

i thought i read a post where people applied fuller's earth via a brush....kinda like a brush you use to apply old fashioned shaving cream on. i think that would work quite well on the hat.

i've never tried using fullers earth either so i'm sorry i can't help you any further. i don't think you'd need to put any on your boots...just go walking in a field. as for the other stuff, i wouldn't want to hazard a guess...i'm not really into distressing.

I have a makeup brush that I apply it with. I have the jug of Fuller's by my bed, and I put the brush in and get it all dusty, then tap it on the ledge of the jug a few times, and brush it on sporadically, so it isn't too even. That's how I put it on my hat, too. Then when I want to take it off, I use a wet sponge for the jacket, and a hat brush for the hat. Works fine for me.

Oh I have a brush that I use, but I mean more like techniques and whatnot... do you put the dust around the seams (like you would with acetone) or JUST wherever you think real dust would land? Maybe both? Are there specific areas you highlight? What about for the hat? Besides the edges of the ribbon and bow, are there specific areas you highlight?

Strider - thx for the info on jacket dust removal. Good stuff! Never would have thought of a wet sponge.. I'd be afraid of Fuller's Mud.

Ohhh, ok. I try to put it around places I think dust would get. The sleeves, the pockets, some of the back panel, a little bit of the front. That way it doesn't look too evenly dispersed. On the hat, I put some on the brim (all around, and especially the front), and some on the bottom half of the ribbon (to look like that "sweat salt" stain), a tad on the sides of the crown and the creases (because to brush that off with a hat brush, you'd have to pop the creases back out, and I don't like doing that, so I use a small amount that will fall off on its own over time in those areas), and a little on the back. I take a q-tip and apply some right above the ribbon, tracing a line around the top so it really gets that Cairo dirt look going on.

Fuller's is pretty much the same as chalk dust. Never made my own Fuller's mud.

How well does it stick to the jacket? (Until you clean it off?)
What color is the most common to use? Sand? Umbra?
(I guess that depends on what place you want to look like you've "been to an adventure" in.)

Swindy - the color everybody gets is "natural," a.k.a. "no-dye-added-that'll-stain-your-AB." I think it sticks pretty well to the jacket. The hat it'll sorta blow off of in spots unless you get enough on there - like Strider only puts a little in some areas so he doesn't have to brush it out later.

Thanks Strider! Comic Con chances went up a whole lot a few days ago (my gf and I fixed some problems and things are good now) and so I gotta have my gear lookin' good! I have to iron out the creases on my pants, too.

No prob! Glad to hear it!!

Powder puff (type used for applying make up) works best. Just dab it on for mottled effect - looks awesome. If you just throw Fuller's Earth at the hat it wont work very well

It has my pounce bag "technique" and Rick5150's hat application with a brush.

I used the pounce bag on my jacket last year at DragonCon. I went over the seams and then just kind of randomly around the rest and rubbed it in to blend it some. (or I guess you could brush it to blend it too)

Ponce bag is the best method I think.

I use old socks (doubled up) just dab around where you need it.

whipwarrior once put it on his hat by putting some Texas dirt into a sock and hitting his hat with the sock. It came out looking great.

I have to admit, I use more of a brute force method, but it's cheaper because I'm using a buff-colored mortar dust - same color tone from what I've figured, but not Fuller's Earth, so I don't mind wasting it.

I literally through a couple handfuls at my hat, then just grab it by the brim and whack it again my leg once. The effect is the dust stays where it's gonna stay and gets knocked off the most exposed smoother areas.

As for the jacket, boots, and such, I only dusted them once but used basically the same method. Threw a bunch on myself, shook out the jacket once, stamped my feet, that was it.

I went out and dusted up my Akubra for practice - and since I don't wear it much anymore, and I think it looks pretty good. I used a powder puff to do the edge of the ribbon and a brush to do the brim and on the bow and whatnot. I'm going to add a little more to the crown and then I think it'll be done.

I think I'll leave my AB clean.

We'll see about the Wested though... hm.... can you wear a dirty fedora with a clean jacket, or will that look bad?
