Waterproofing

Has anyone sprayed their fedora with a water repellent spray before?
I'm going on a trip camping in the boundary waters and was spraing my leather boots and am now thinking about the hat. Mine is a Stetson Temple (I know...not the favorite) and some of you had mentioned that it's color runs in a downpour. I scotchguarded it about a year ago but was thinking of using this stuff that's used on leather and fabrics. Should I be concerned? I'm also hoping it would keep it from tapering from the rain.
Thoughts anyone.

Do not use that product. It contains silicone, and will ruin the felt. If that doesn't matter, go for it.
Just add a bit more standard scotchgard and hope for the best. If it's a fur felt stetson and gets to soaked, prepare for the dye to release. You'll have brown water running down between your eyes. Personal experience talking here.
Sorry, you Stetson isn't the best choice to be taking to a rainy area, and there's not a WHOLE lot you can do about it.
Regards! Michaelson

Thanks for the heads-up. I know the Stetson Temple isn't a great hat, so maybe if it gets wrecked badly enough I can justify the upgrade to an Akubra Fed.

I can tell by your screenname that you're a guy after my own heart (jones??? no, the OTHER part), but if you ever thought of getting an AdventureBilt, this is your last chance before the price likely DOUBLES.
See here if you haven't already:

Once it does, yes, the Akubra will be the natural budget hat - and I use the term 'budget' with respect, meaning 'less costly', not 'lacking quality', as many, many here have managed to get a dead-on Indy look from an Akubra, bashing it themselves no less.

You are not going to believe this.
Its been a while since I read the sight and missed the great news about AB. Congrats Steve and Mark. After I read about it and how the price is going up my wife told me to get one!?!? Now don't get me wrong, my wife is a wonderful lady but that caught me by surprise. So I'll be ordering soon, very soon.

I also own a Stetson temple. I replaced the ribbon myself and was surprised that I could get it looking halfway decent. My wife says that "It looks great! Stop worrying about it!" But, I would rather wear my HJ or Akubra. (Or my AB, which is obviously ON HOLD thanks to all our hopes coming true!)
I say, wear it wherever and whenever you want and see what happens. If I wore it out for a day/night, whatever happens happens, and I will know first-hand what affects what, as far as felts, dyes, etc... It's something I have been curious about myself, but if it doesn't hold up, then it doesn't hold up. On to wearing my favorite fedoras, and learning a bit without a substantial cost.
I would love to know how it works out, even though Michaelson is probably right. Gosh darn you Michaelson!!
I'll catch ya being wrong someday... And this could be it!!
