Post by midwestwhips »

Here are some pics of the 5 foot 12 plait performers bullwhip that was made with the white roo hide I had left over from when I ordered it for the Rundown whips.

I also took a couple very short video's from different angles to see how the white whip turns out visually.

I really like how the whip turned out, and I think it will look great on a stage.

That knot came out FANTASTIC, (when I last saw it, it wasn't done yet.) The three strands of blue at the bottom look awesome!

And yes, Ripper, I saw it, (and cracked it,) on a REALLY overcast evening, and it was BRIGHT. It's going to be VERY visible under stage lights!

It's also accurate as H-E-double-hockey-sticks! Just rolls right out where you point it and BAM!

What was it's proud new owner's reaction when he saw it with the knots finished?

Paul,

As always, beautiful work! I'm sure the whip's owner will be very impressed with it....

Indyologist,

Hmmm....I'm thinking the quote is from "The Princess Bride." Correct?

High Regards,

Indyologist,

Thanks so much! Great quote too, ;-)

Ripper,

Thanks! It is bright! On the video's I took, I had to step out of the sun because it was just too bright that it washed out on the video.

Chris,

Thanks for the compliments. The new owner said, "it exceeded my expectations!"

Dan,

The knot came out really nicely! I am extreemely happy with this whip. And so was Gery Deer, the 'Proud new owner' of this whip. I met with him today to give it to him, and took a quick video of him talking about the whip for a testimonial page I'm working on getting up on the website. I was hoping to get a video of him cracking it for the first time, but unfortunately we met in a mall parking lot. He was on his way down to Cincinnati to go to a rehearsal for an upcoming show where he will be using the whip.

Here is a pic of Gery with his new whip:

And his video testimonial:

Gee, thanks Paul. Now I get to figure out how to shoot footage of the darn thing! :x

Oh well, I'm up for the challenge! ;-)

That pic came out great. Incidentally to everyone else, the color scheme was something Gery'd been debating over for a while. He knew he wanted blue, white and black to match his "trademark" color scheme, but he'd been waffling over whether to have a black whip with the blue and white in the knots, or a two tone white/black with blue knots, or this pattern.

"You have chosen...wisely..." (another movie quote, and if ya don't get THAT one, you're on the wrong bloody forum!)

I've spent time tweaking that logo, and getting the colors exactly right, (there are massive color variations between web, video, and print.) Black and white are easy, but the hide selection on the blue is spot on! (now you're probably going to tell me that it's just some blue you had laying around, aren't you? Well, seriously. You could tell Gery that you spent HOURS trying to match the color of that logo, and he'd probably believe you!)

Nice shot by the "Propagandamobile," by the way, (I swear it's subconscious how he posed! You can even read the phone number, and you can't crop it out without losing the shot of the whip! Ya know, Paul...some people would be upset if you didn't blur out the phone number. Gery would be upset if you DID!)

Now, I'm going to have to make a 2 hour sojourn to Cincinnati so I can see the show he's doing there. I'd been debating whether I could make it or not, (finishing a Master's Degree this summer, working on my own act/propaganda, AND moving, so I'm KINDA busy,) but now I want to see how that thing shows up under stage lights, (so I can begin trying to figure out the filter, f-stop and shutter speed settings on my camera so it doesn't wash out!)

Once again, great job, Mr. Nolan! You're too darn good at this for your age! When you reach the vintage of David Morgan, Terry Jacka, and Cecil Henderson, (well, the age he was when he passed on, anyway,) you'll be doing 97 plait whips as a morning warm up, (just quit smoking, so you'll actually MAKE it that long!) ;-)

The GLD bullwhip! Awesome, I even like the two-tone poppers! I know that we talked about this whip already, but great job Paul. It looks like it handles superbly in your youtube clips and those videos speak for themselves.

The only trouble with white whips is that when using them out doors they don't want to stay white for long  .

It was really funny. Gery was really excited when he saw it the first time, and even more excited when he cracked it. He's been talking about this "signature whip that Paul's gonna make for me," for about 2 years now. It was hilarious to see him fawning over it on Sunday, (the knots weren't done, and he was like a little kid..."Can't you finish it now? Come on!" We were in the parking lot of the Olive Garden in Groveport, Ohio! It was interesting to see the looks on the patrons coming and going were giving us. Most of them had just come from high school graduations, and I'm sure they were utterly confused.)

It helps with the color that Gery practices primarily indoors in his studio, (which is thankfully air conditioned. Spent the better part of Sunday in there working with Gery on a few things I wanted a second set of eyes on.) And he plans on using it only indoors for target cutting, so that will help a lot.

With what I put my whips through, that white would be all but gone within a week or so. But Gery is a LOT easier on whips than I am. In fact, he still has the original popper on his Zorro whip, which has been the main targeting whip for about 2-3 years now, (mind you, it helps if you have lots of whips to spread the wear and tear out on, and not all of his whips are so spotless.)

It also helps that for when it DOES get dirty, he's got that white scuff-fixer that those of us who were in a marching band that wore white shoes know ALL TOO WELL. ;-)

I think I still might have some in a box somewhere in my parents attic that I could give him.
