The leather Peter stopped getting in from England before switching to the Italian company was much, much, MUCH better than what they are currently using. I've heard someone say the newer Westeds are sort of 'lifeless', which is a good way to put it. Once broken in, the English lambskin was exactly the way the Indy jackets should be.

My Italian lamb Wested is a couple of years old now, and shows a similar wear pattern. (yeah yeah, pics maybe later) I don't think I'd call it lifeless. I love it, and I don't see any need to get another anytime soon--still distressing this one the old fashioned way! My mother noticed a wear spot on the elbow and said, "You'd better get some dye and fix that right away!" I said, "Are you crazy? That's the point of this jacket!"

P.S. My solution for the side straps pointing in awkward directions is little black twist-ties. They're invisible and keep the strap from pulling all the way through the buckle, so there isn't excess length to flap around.
