Great idea, IJ. There are two cracks I learned at the Texas summit.

You can download the whipcrack video here. (6.1 Mb)

1.)The Underhand Crack. Just like in tennis where you may have the racket down by your leg to hit the ball up in the air, this crack works the same way. The whip starts behind you on the ground. You move your hand forward and just as your hand passes your leg, you flick the wrist and follow through. The whip continues forward and the crack occurs way out in front.

2.)I don't know the name of this other crack but Sebastian explains it well in the video. You start with the whip in the front and curl your wrist. The whip loops right next to you. When you move your hand forward, the tip of the whip speeds up through the loop and crack occurs right next to you.

Let me warm up the video editing machine and I will post some short clips of what I am talking about.

Cheers,
Pyro.

My favorite is a variation of the "over the head" horizontal crack. Instead of swinging it over my head 3 or 4 times first, I start out with the whip behind me on the right (or I unsnap it from the belt, and uncoil it to the right behind me), then I swing it in front, up and over myself (doing only one "loop" over my head) and then snap it at 2:00 to the right in front of me, and it falls back to my right in the back, ready for a second one. So it goes up and over my head just the one time. You don't have to "whip" it really hard either. In fact, it's better if you go slow and smooth. And being a "horitontal crack" - it lets out a whopper of a crack.

Ok here is the video for the first crack.
Click here to download (8.9 Mb .mpg)

Here is the video for the second crack. (3.6 Mb .mpg)

(Tech Note: The files are a little large, but you can right click on it and choose Save As. I decided to put them in .mpg format so they can be played on a wider range of platforms without having to install additional software.)

Pyroxene

Thanks, Pyr, those videos were fun. I guess my favorite has always been what he calls the Stockman's crack, although there seem to be limitless ways to do it....

Try this page:
http://www.imptech.net/whips/videos/

But Brady, you should go to the main Indy Gear whip page and check out these links:
http://www.indygear.com/gear/whip_links.shtml

There is a wealth of information there.

Thanks, I guess I should explore a little more before posting. However, I'm sure those of you who know where stuff is won't mind sharing and me being the crazy busy college time that I am would benefit from your sharing of knowledge. Thanks! :D

Pyro,

I downloaded those clips you posted and have been watching them over and over trying to learn how the crack is done. I have one question, who is the guy with the whip? Does he use COW too? Thanks!

My favorite crack is the X slash that Harrison did in the behind-the-scenes Cairo marketplace footage on The Making of Raiders. I also love the upward slash (like a lion tamer's crack, but in reverse, from the ground up). Wicked stuff.

My trademark "Streets of Cairo" Crack. Start from the back, bring it under, then over your shoulder and straight out, then POW! Repeat 5 times. :D

Yeah I can do the overhead crack too with my 10 footer with a nice big BOOM. I can do it in a few varietys but I can only do the overhead well. I can do overhead cracks over and over with the 10 footer but I can only get a few cracks at a time with forward, side, ect. :(
