Hi everyone,

I will get too the point; how do you get that really great looking swoop on the front of the brim on your Feds?

Take care,

Paul.

A lot of things play a role in geatting the swoop." The shape of the head, shape of the blocked hat, and how tight the hat fits.
Before creasing ( bashing ) the hat , grab the brim and turn it toward the right ( non ribbion side ) until you get the swoop you are looking for. Everyone is a little different , so go back and forth to get the right spot.

a method that works on some hats (for me, todd's HJ's) is to bash the brim symetrically in the front....ie, an even dip of the beak on both sides....and then give the hat the raiders turn. the brim will automatically swoosh. but as bending oak says, this is highly dependent on a lot of things like the hat's fit, how soft the hat is, your head shape, etc.

for a hat with pretty hard, thick felt, you are better off bashing the swoosh while already turned. if you are looking for the SA look, there are some great screen grabs in the first thread of the fedora section as well as a good tutorial (pagey's/whiskeyman's tutorial).

the bottom line is, the ribbon side should have a mild transitioning curl from the front of the hat to the rear. the right side should have the nice angled break at the front of the hat and a consistant curl of the brim to the rear. where these 2 meet in the front will give you the nice swoosh.

perhaps the veterans can chime in here as well: aries, gcr, $3K......

Just so the terminology is not confusing, both of you referred to the ribbon side. The ribbon actually goes all the way around the hat. I think you meant to say the bow side.

Very good catch, Buff. I totally passed over that myself. :)

Details are so important, Gater. And you know you can't escape it. If we get interrupted during one of my stories, I'll just pick right back up where I left off, last time I saw ya'.

Which reminds me, last year at the Finger Lakes Summit I was telling you about the time that.....

Thank you everyone for your help. I was just thinking about the turning of the Fed thing: is turning the lid goning to make the bow look like it is too far forward? Just a thought.

Thanks again; this information is priceless.

Paul.

No, it will be in the same position as Ford's was in Raiders.
