Ok folks, here it is, one of the very first "Coyles" jackets
hot off the drawing board. I basically opened it up, tried it on,
and took a bunch of pics. I'll hold off giving any form of review
until I inspect it more closely.

In the meantime, here are the pics. These were taken in
direct sunlight.

From what I see, it looks great... The cowhide is very nice, I really like the grain.

I will be interested in what you have to say regarding fit, quality of construction, etc...

Thanks for posting the pics!!

Blues that is a fine looking jacket. As for a pic of you wearing it, just remove one of the pics you've posted and put in a pic of you wearing the jacket. That should be playing by the rules as it is the same number of pics, just rotating...or am I wrong?

But thanks anyway, Sharpetoys.

It does look a bit big on him but he may want it like that, it is a XXL afterall. I am still waiting on my 38 or small, however they are sizing them, I hope it fits well. Blues, what number were you on the list?

Posted: Tue May 08, 2007 8:44 pm

Oh definitely, Dr_J. I already worked it out with Todd, and I'm sending it back. It's about a size or so too large, AND the cuffs are a little wide, but that was discussed as well.
Todd is taking care of me, no worries.

I believe I was number 5 on the list. Funny, I am the only one to post pics,...where are all the Todds jackets???

Blues - I love the length on that one. Is that just because it's so big on you, or did you ask for it that way? That's how long I want mine when I order!!! Also, do you know your normal jacket size / inches (46, 48, 50) so I can estimate how a XXL would look on me?

C.J, Well, it's long because of the size being too large. I would say that THIS jacket would fit a size 48-50 very well(I'm a 46), and the length depends on what you like. I'm 5'9", and this is about an 1 1/2" too long all around.
Although it's probably a great TOD length.

IndianaG, I totally forgot you posted yours. :)

The pockets don't look centered about the storm flap, and the side
straps look very long.

Is it like this in real life, or is it just the pictures?

I agree also, the jacket is way too big on you.

Hmmm... It does looks like the pocket placement is off.... It was probably difficult for Todd to scale an XXL...

I am sure that Todd has things well-tweaked by now. ;) Makes me kind of glad that I am # 12 or 13 on the list though..... :)

Congrats on the jacket.

Sizing, sight unseen, is always a difficult thing. So, your suit jacket size is a 46? Did you request the XXL?

If Todd makes my jacket anywhere close to your fit, I'll be happy. It's always something about my 6 foot 4 inches, 220 lbs, and 40 inch sleeves that creates issues. (Longer is better, at least for me.)

Sincerely

Yes, my suit jacket size is a 46R. I think the mixup was because of the initial sizing chart Todd supplied,...an XXL seemed like it wouldn't be big enough to fit me, so I voiced my concerns, and sent him some measurements.

Todd is changing the sizing scale to go with chest size now, as opposed to the S-XXL sizing. If you give him your chest size, waist size, height, and sleeve length(from center of collar stand, across shoulder, and down to cuff), he will fit you with the proper pattern from those measurments. I don't think he's doing any "special changes" to the jacket, other than that. Pretty sure he's going with a set pattern, and just sizing it accordingly.

Todd may chime in here to ellaborate, but this system makes the most sense.

Wow! I certainly hope he gets his sizing for standard patterns closer. This doesn't look or sound any different than the system Wings has used for years regarding sizing, and folks constantly complain about it.

As much as Wested seems to hit/miss the mark on a number of things, when I sent my sizing information and concerns to them, they nailed the fit for me the first time. Todd, it's a great looking jacket, but after my current US Wings debacle, I want to be 1000% certain on how things are sized before I consider getting another jacket from anybody! (How difficult is it to get somethinbg around a size 40 when you ASK for a size 40?)

I wouldn't be too concerned, considering there have been about 7 or 8 total jackets made, and this was one was just an oversize issue, probably more of a mis-communication issue, than anything.
I have faith Todd will work out all the kinks, if and when they arise. :D

It's hard to tell when it's XXL.
What are those gussets?

Let's wait till we see the Medium size.

I can't tell if the "graining" in that leather is from the actual hide texture itself, or if its 'cause the leather is thin. The more I look at it, the more I'm leaning towards the thin theory. How is it Blues?

I hope that Todd can also get his jackets in Goatskin as well. Great looking jacket Todd!!

Well, it is difficult, especially when you are trying to create a screen-accurate look on 5'1" people with a 40" chest to 6'1" people with a 40" chest. This is the dilemma. If I were making sweat shirts, it wouldn't matter.

My original thought was to simply scale the whole jacket up and down - pockets, collar, sleeve, everything proportionally. I'm re-thinking that now. That will work on some people but not on all. IB's jacket would probably look right on someone 6'4" (and I will need to fit 6'4" people like Dr. Seuss) but on IB some things look out of whack.

Perhaps my system will work, but sizes will have to be chosen based on height as well as width. For instance, IB jacket might indeed be proportional to his chest, but not his height. Therefore, he should go with a smaller size that is proportionally tighter around the chest, but better fitting on the shoulders, neck and arms. At any rate, bear with me while these things get worked out - this is a new venture for me and I'm learning as I go.
The pockets don't look centered about the storm flap, and the side

You are right about the pockets. This is one of those screen accurate features that some people won't like.

I'm looking at the side straps again. Problem is, the straps are long enough to allow the sides to open all the way (for people with larger waists). However, when they are cranked down for thinner people, there is a lot of excess strap. Two solutions: find the fit you like, and then trim the straps. A seamstress can do it easily or I can provide instructions. Otherwise, I can cut them to your waist size.

As for buckles, we are still sourcing those. Haven't found the perfect ones yet. I'll probably have to have them made. I'll try to provide some prongs for an easy retrofit for those of you who would like them.

Todd, thanks for a reasonable explanation regarding sizing. Yes, everyone is built differently (I wear 40 Short at 5'4") so there are differences in body types to consider. I generally refer to many medium jackets I've tried on which fall within a certain range. My comment comes from my current frustration with US Wings' sizing, since they don't seem to fit into any sizing formula that I've ever seen. Case in point, I own a US Wings cotton Indy which is a medium that fits me great, so I figured their clearance jacket sizes would be comperable. Nowhere close. Even their small is much bigger than the medium jacket I initially ordered. It's just the inconsistency, that's all.

I'm sure your sizing will be consistent once you iron out the kinks.

If only IB had my arms, Todd could send the jacket to me. If the fit is otherwise correct for my body, excepting the sleeve length, perhaps IB's jacket could be "reconstructed" with longer sleeves.

Todd, if all are in agreement, send it to me. I'll try it on, assess the fit, and advise on the correct sleeve length. I am more than happy to eat the S/H in exchange for proper fit.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

I received my replacement Todd's jacket, and she is a beauty. :D
I haven't had a chance to take some good outdoor shots, but plan on taking many.

I think it looks fantastic, and with a little break in time, it will only get better. :D Todd did an excellent job making a jacket that fits me like it should. The craftsmanship is supurb. The leather feels nice and soft, and as you can see in the pics, it drapes like silk. The color is really nice, and not nearly as "reddish" as it seems to come up in photos. It is a nice chocolate brown, a perfect balance between Dark Brown, and Authentic.

So, without further delay, here she is:
