Camptown 1945 Grey - Indy Style

Post by michaeljcr »

Hi All

I got my Camptown 1945 Grey Indy Style (bashed by Ken) hat a few weeks back and have finally got around to getting some pictures taken so I can do a review.

First off, the colour is fantastic, difficult to do justice to in a picture as it depends on the lighting, a nice mid grey with a dark (black?) ribbon. The closest I could get is the first picture below, the others look a little light on my moniter with a greenish tint:

(Mods - hopefully I've posted these picture correctly and to an acceptable size, it's the first time I've done it!)

On to the rest of the hat! The first thing I noticed was how much stiffer it felt, much more so than my AB (or my Fed and Fed Dlx). I actually really like this about the hat as it's got a different feel to my others and has no fear of a stiff breeze, as I discovered today on a trip to the supermarket.

I'm never quite sure on hat size as I'm somewhere in beetween a 58 and 59, but as my size 58.5 AB is grat with short hair I went for a 59 and have padded it out a bit. As the experts here often tell us, I imagine this with shrink down a little bit!

Overall I'm delighted with the hat, the colour is great and goes well with my authentic lamb Wested, the stiff felt is a nice variation on my exisiting collection and the hat feels great on. I do worry sometimes that my AB looks a bit small for my face (although I love it to bits!) but the overall look of the Camptown 1945 seems bigger - see what you think of the AB below and again, ignore the colour, it's a great brown from the 'Ford felt' run and looks a little green in the picture due to weird lighting:

That is one sweet looking lid, man! Thanks for the review, I enjoyed reading it. Wanna add that to the "For Newbies" thread?

First off, that's a pretty nice pair of hats you have there. The color on the Camptown looks nice and the overall shape of the crown looks pretty good as well. The brim seems wide to me, very wide. What are the specs on the Camptown, anyway? Oh, and to answer your question, the AB looks perfect for your face shape, and I mean dead on. I think that AB brim width suits you a bit better than the Camptown brim does, to be honest. That's just my opinion, though. The Camptown still looks nice as well, don't get me wrong, I just wouldn't worry about the AB being "too small" if I were you.

Cool hat(s), thanks for posting!!!

Thank you all for the kind words!

GCR - I know what you mean about the brim, the 1945 has (according to the website) a less dimensional brim which makes it wider. I kind of like it, but it does move away from the Indiana Jones look.

Of course, now I'm hooked on grey I'll have to start thinking about a getting another AB! Oh no, I think my girlfriend might have sensed me typing that! Quick, someone cause a distraction!

Michael,

Thank you for the terrific review. I am very happy that you like your hat. As I have said on the issues of the brim and the stiffness:

1. The Brim is deliberately big, so it can be cut/shaped however one wants it. I can always cut more off, but can't add to a brim.

2. The Stiffness - Again its by design. When I prototyped the 1936, the first body was the right blend but stiffer than I expected. Nonetheless, I tried it out and found that with my goal being regular daily wear resistance under rough use, the stiffness allowed a break in period to let it soften up in both the brim and crown over time. The stiffness (if you prefer) after it softens can be reactivated with a little bit of steam.

Wear it in good health, my friend and welcome to the Camptown family.

So what are the pre finished spec's ? I am torn between a C dent and a center crease crown.. :? Any chance of a side by side of the two crowns ?
Great hat by the way michaeljcr ! Post a few more pics if you could, one of the inside and one of the top of the crown would be great !

Thanks !

Hi Ken

I really like the idea of the hat reaching a natural level re: stiffness, it'll be interesting to see how it adapts to regular wear - all part of the fun of trying different styles. I like the wide brim as well, it's a nice contrast to my other hats and, although I might cut it down at a later date, it's staying as is for the time being!

Thanks for making such a fine hat available, I'm sure I'll come looking for one in brown before long!

High Regards!

Michael.

Will do, I'm in London on business for a few days though so it might be Friday before I get chance to take some more pictures.

Sounds good. I am almost certain I will go for the C Dent crown. I like a "peroid" hat. It is still adventurous as well.

IMHO (sorry, I could not resist), the crown width vs face width looks very good. Brim width can obviously be based upon a variety of whims/dictates. A wider brim, on a scorching, sunny day, can be a good thing.

The sweat looks wide. Is it similar in size to the sweat in the PB Custom Indy?

Sincerely,

Awesome hats. I love the grey one (and the AB, of course). The brim looks good to me, but I prefer a wider brim.

Cheers! I like the wide brim as well, although I'm sure I'll eventually break down and try shaping it a bit more.

The hat you're wearing in the avatar looks fantastic, is that an AB as well?
