Decided to buy a new piece of gear every paycheck

So wadda ya'll think? I think my first purchase is either going to be an AB Fedora or a Wested jacket, since (other than the satchel) those are the most defining articles of clothing for any gearhead, IMHO. After those, I'm thinking either a pair of Magnoli Adventure Boots, or some genuine Aldens. Haven't decided on that yet (hmm... me thinks I'll make a new poll thread...). Then will come a pair of pants and shirt (both probably from Magnoli). Somewhere along the line I'd like to get a genuine unissued MK VII, but that's not top priority.

So what do my soon-to-be-peer gearheads think about my plan? Got any suggestions to my purchase locations or order? Help me help you... I mean me. Haha.

Out of nosyness, can I ask: Why Magnoli Shirt and trousers and not, say, Noel Howard's?

This is why I asked if anyone had any suggestions. Do you have a good link to a good comparison between them? I have not set this in stone even a little bit.

My question to you is this: do you have it in your budget to get a new piece of gear with every paycheck? This is a fun hobby, but don't let it get in the way of paying the bills! There's a lot of gear to be had, but there's no rule that says you have to get everything all at once. I've been in this hobby for a handful of years now and STILL don't have "proper" Indy trousers or shirt, but I'm happy with close enoughs. I've saved up and been patient for the jacket, hat, bag, and boots, but I can tell you those purchases were spread out over time.

I guess my main point is that you should have fun and enjoy this hobby, but if you're new to it, don't let it consume you. Remember to go out there and live life and have real adventures of your own. Take the time to read the archives and find out about the different gear options and what sits you best. If you have it in your budget to buy a new piece of gear with every paycheck, then don't let me stop you if that's what you really wish to do, but my advice is to make sure you're making educated buys and getting what you want to buy based off your reasearch. Don't just rush in. Good luck!

I'm newly single (read: from a marriage), in the military, and deployed. I have no bills that don't come out automatically and some excess funds that I didn't have before. I just feel like it's time I started spending some money on ME.

Umm I would think that the hat and the whip are the most memorable gear pieces of Indiana Jones. I've been into gear for four years now and the only SA stuff I have are the hat, jacket, whip, pants and bag. Everything else is just close enoughs.

Then go for it! Again, I'm not trying to tell you (or anyone, for that matter) how to spend his or her money. I have seen, though, some folks who have rushed into gear buying without having a sense of perpective, that's all. And I admit that my record isn't spotless.

After all is said and done with the gear, then comes the gun and props! THAT's where the big bucks are needed! ;)

I think that is a great idea to buy something every paycheck. Nothing wrong with getting stuff you want if you have the money.

For me I started with the a Wested, because I love leather jackets. Next I ordered a hat (I got in on the AB rabbit deal) and cant wait to get it. I got the Magnoli Indy shirt and love it! I wear that shirt all the time.

If you are going to get an AB from Fedora order it first that way you can get other gear items while waiting for the hat and that way the pain of the wait wont be so bad. On the jacket with the way the dollar is against the pound you might want to check Todd's jacket, or some of the other jacket offerings before deciding on which vendor to order from.

Have fun gear shopping!

Sounds like a good plan, ordering something every payday, that's pretty much how I put together my outfit as well.

The two items that'll probably have the longest wait time would be the AB fedora and the Wested, so ordering them first would make sense. They also are the two most important items of an Indy outfit as well. If wait time is an issue you might consider one of the new Herbert Johnson hats, which shouldn't take nearly as long as an AB.

I personally like the made-to-measure aspect of Magnoli's clothing, but that's because I'm often not happy with off the rack sizes, especially if I can't try it on first. On the flip side I figure the Noel Howard shirt and pants would be one of those buy 'em once, and don't need to worry about upgrading later kinds of purchases, so if the cost of the NH stuff doesn't put off it might be the way to go.

Same thing with the boots, for the money, you might as well get the Alden's. Harrison liked them for a reason, and I'm sure you will too!

For all of the other belts and accessories I highly recommend Todd's items. Everything I've bought from him has been top notch and arrived very quickly too.

So good luck, welcome to the world of Indy Gear, and be sure to post pics!

:)

I'm new as an Indy gearhead (tend to be a gearhead in general), and I think your plan is good. Since I'm a bit in isolation (it's unlikely I'll run into any overly critical gear heads here) and since I like making things, I've put together several Indy-oriented props already as a way of getting in the mood. I now have 5 shirts which I constructed out of on-sale items, retailored and redyed, that are as visibly close to the screen shirts as I could ever want. Just bought a jacket 2nd hand and am working on a 2nd hand fedora, and I got a pair of near-enough boots on deep discount. So even though I am on a tight budget, I have been able to put together an outfit that pleases me for relatively little money. E-bay has been a good source (I have several searches running for 12 months that email me with hits), as has been the bazaar here. With a little creatvity, you can stretch your Indy budget and still eat well. Go for it and keep us posted on your finds.

I'm on the waiting list for one of Todd's jackets, and I PMed Fedora about a beaver AB, so that's a start.

See, now Indiana G, you went and ruined it for Texas Raider. Here I was thinkin' to myself, "You know, I could probably afford to get another member a nice hat like the AB Deluxe. It'd be in the spirit of Indy, so why not?" But then you had to ask for something too, and then there'd be someone else, and I just don't have that kind of cash, so I guess I'll just have to get stuff for myself.

Haven't updated this thread in a while, so here goes. In the order of purchase...

What I have in my possession right now:

1.) Indy Magnoli Adventure Satchel.

2.) Forever 21 "(insert name I can't remember here)" Close-enough shirt (which, IIRC, is no longer available)

3.) Sketcher's "Traffic" Close-enough boots

What I have paid for and am just waiting to receive:

4.) Todd's Costumes Lambskin Indy Jacket

5.) Adventurebilt Hats "Fortune & Glory" Fedora

6.) Bernie Wojcicki 10' 12-plait Indy-style bullwhip (in the mail right now!)

7.) L.L. Bean Dark Khaki Dress Chinos, Natural Fit, Pleated with no Cuffs Close-enough pants (soon to be mailed from home)

What I have inquired about but not paid for yet:

8.) Dark Khaki web belt (from Todd)

9.) Adventurebilt's new screen-accurate shirt

What is on my list, but not very high:

10.) Work gloves (probably purchase from Todd)

11.) Leather gun belt and holster (think I'll wait around for the AB versions)

And, of course, I still don't have any pictures. I should have my new whip sometime next week I'm guessing, as well as my pants from home. Hopefully my jacket won't be far removed. I'll take some pics once I get my pants and jacket. I'd like to be able to take some with my hat, but I don't see it coming for quite a few months (not that I mind waiting, because I don't. I know it'll be WELL worth the wait!).

You'll have a long wait then. Fedora's only doing hats, so you'll probably have to ask someone else for the belt/holster. :junior: -IJ

ok didn't see that. It's still not fedora doing it though, but I see your point. :junior: -IJ

Technically, you're BOTH right.

Steve and Marc are still only making hats. Jakob/JEEP is in effect being allowed to use the AdventureBilt name in some fashion for leather goods.

Exactly how you'll see it unfold is not clear to me, but that's basically it.

:P you wouldn't happen to be a lawyer, would you?

JK, yeah, I noticed that earlier on, but thought it would be petty for me to bring it up. :junior: -IJ

While I COULD answer that question, there'd be a lot of fine print to go with it. ;)

Hmm... just got an email today saying my L.L. Bean pants shipped. :? Oh well, I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. If it wanted to be available and ship early, then by all means! :D
