New member here. I got the Indy bug when I first saw the movies. I have made several 1/6 scale Indies. My Avatar is a sample. Here is a pair of shirt I recently made. I found a white cotten shirt for $9.99 on clearance and bought 3 of 'em. I cannibalized one for the epaulettes, buttons and front trim, then dyed according to DALEXS's formula. Since the shirt was white to start, I didn't need to remove any color.
Final result - 2 Indy shirts for a total of $35.00, including the dye, and some 5 hours of sewing and dyeing! I know the pocket flaps are not quite right - I'll have to do something about that sometime.

Nice work! The colour looks pretty accurate.

I've done the same thing a year ago and the total coast of one shirt was 6$. As it was a regular dress shirt I also had to make pockets. I think it's a great and cheap(!) way to reproduce Indy shirts

BTW- Welcome to COW

Henrik

Thanks all. I know the eps are off, too, but I cut them out of the front button strip, since I am not so good with the buttonhole attachment. The front was not long enough to make 4 perfect ones. I plan to practice buttonholing and make longer ones from the shirt back material.

I agre with above. Good work. If I had the time and the skill I would try a hand at sewing a few shirts together.

Yet another new New Englander in this place? Where have you guys been hiding? Slick job with the shirt by the way...looks a heck of a lot better than my first Indy shirt. Nice job!

I found a shirt almost exactly like that at Target the other day (except short sleeved). Oddly enough, I was browsing for an Indy shirt when I found it. anyway, I recognized the hook on the back of your shirt was the same as mine, and I found your shirt online (at least I think it's your shirt).

That's the one - they had them clearanced, so I went back and got 3 more to fix up when I get the chance. I fixed the epaulettes on the first 2, as well, so now they are a lot closer.
GCR - I've been here (NE - not Ipswich) all my life! Like Jon Richman:
"I've been all around the world, but I love New England best.
I might be prejudiced.
But it's true, I love New England best.
Dum-de-dum-de-dum-dum-da-dum-day
Oh, New England."

Great work! It'd be great if you could figure out a way to keep making them. You could sell them for $40, ke a good profit for yourself, and still provide us COWs with an Indy shirt that we don't have to take a loan to pay for. I can dream, can't I? ;)

quick questions:
which DALEX formula did you use, the one on his web page, or the revised version posted a while back?
i.e.
is it the 4:3 pearl gray: tan or something different?
and
did the thread take on the new color also? or did the thread remain white?
how do the buttons look with the new color?

thanks!

Hi. I'm new. I'm trying this myself with a couple of thrift store shirts I found, (inspired by you and those wacky Star Wars types and their nifty Rebel Fleet Trooper shirt conversions) Sort of as a trial run. Does anyone have actual epaulette dimentions? The Covington safai shirt I'm using as the base shirt came with straps to secure the sleaves when rolled up, which are totally long enough, I'm afraid they'll be too skinny. They're like an 1 3/8" or something.
But price wise I'm up to $4.85 so far. We'll see what I'm in for after all the Rit dye and dye removal purchases are made.
