Africa Jones in New York

I've just returned from my bi-annual NYC trip which included the Yankee's opener, The Bronx Zoo, many dinners and generally other non-touristy things that I get up to when I visit. Of course I took the Akubra and it received many admiring glances and comments, especially from the Jazz cats down in the Village.

Here are a few shots from my "concrete jungle" adventure...

I got thoroughly whipped at speed chess and the old guy in the last photo was a Village character who dragged me into the photo with some other tourists.

Alas my gear isn't authentic bar the hat but hopefully that'll be rectified soon with a Wested jacket - and I'd left my Mk VII at home due to not having the leather strap on it.

Well, it wasn't Africa but I had a ball!

Take care,

Africa.

nice pics, you will always find something great in NYC and great to do.

One question for you? I see you wear your fed's brim down ( in the back)???

Nice pics. Your jacket looks a lot like a car coat I have from the Gap.

I wear mine like that too!! Yeah, not accurate but I always loved that look. It makes any fedora look like a safari hat IMHO. Fedora[/code]

I think it looks more SoC that way, which is my favorite style.

It's my preference. Keeps all the debris/water sliding off your head, down your back and onto the ground.

Sincerely,

Africa, those are some fresh photos! Did you play for money? Fedoras will always be in style in New York City.

Africa Jones, great photos!

Your Akubra is looking good! :P

BTW, which part of Portugal do you live? (I have a friend in Lisbon who I visited last year)

I played for and lost five bucks - the five minute thing draws you in: the chess shark (in fact a very nice guy with a host of chess move advice) plays like lightening forcing you to do the same. But if you just play calm, five minutes is a lot of time. I actually had him in check for one move which drew a few cheers.

The hat I just bashed following Pagey's advice. It's been sat on and beaten about and mashed on the plane on the way over when I fell sleep leaning on it. Full of crease marks, turned just a tiny bit and I guess a combination of styles.

The back just went that way naturally, sometimes it pops up a little of its own accord.

The coat was some old scuffed thing I picked up for around 25 dollars in a market here. It does the trick - I'm not Indiana Jones. Yes, a lot of Fedoras in NYC and I had many admiring comments, from a hat maker in Maceys to a jazz cat downtown - "Man that's some boss hat!" - I assume it was a compliment. But none I saw had the stovepipe look, and I did hear Indiana Jones references.

Live in Lisbon, flit between there and England and Africa when and if I get the chance though have been more times recently to NYC.

Appreciate all the comments but I am a novice in comparison to you all. But nice to be a part of this though.

Africa.
