Oh, I gotta tell HJS about this one...if he wants them (which he does), he'd better get them NOW (if they even have his correct size left...)
Thanks for the warning.

But I'm glad I got my 2 prescriptions filled last September (reading and progressives). Yikes, ...... But, I do hear the alternatives are quite close to BOIC. Looks like Arizona Smith has some investagatin to do by comparing the alternative to BOIC. Also AZ Smith, if you can get the real low down on what is happening across the pond.

Here is the alternative version....

This is the alternative suggestion....
Company is Berkshire Chase, model "English Beaufort 2":
Looks like they run about $50 cheaper!

Very nice. May have to pick up a pair of those and then save the BOICs for special occations.....

WHAT?!?!

And next week I was going to get new reading glasses. Oh well. It truly won't be the same.
I think I am getting the Berkshire Chase anyway (they ARE $55 cheaper), and they look pretty similar to me.
Does anyone know anything about them? AZ Smith, any info you have on the Berkshires would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Peace,

I've had my BOIC's on order since 10/18 - I spoke to "Don" at BOIC directly on that day, and he said he would be able to get my size frame 51/22 but that there would be a delay as he was having trouble with getting sizes. Appears there was more the story than I was told.
I just finished speaking with Frames direct as I have been waiting patiently for my frames only to find out that now, they may never come. The CSR @ FD is calling "Don" at BOIC to see what the deal is. If they are packing it in then I guess an alternative solution must be found.
If I hear anything different from what _ was told, I will certainly let everyone know. It doesn't look good.

Wow. That is a shocker.
I hope there is better news down the road.

Ok, here's a bigger bummer. It appears that the English Beaufort 2 only go up to 49/22 - Cable. So, that means if you need a bigger size, like me who wears a 51/22 - Cable, you have to get something else.
I looked around the Berkshire Chase Panto 14KT
Look similar AND the go up to 53/24 - Cable. However, the cost $171.95! Whereas the BOIC costs $156.45.
I hope this turns out to be a big fuss over nothing.
We shall see,
Pyro.

You can get the English Beaufort 2's in the 51/22 cbl.
Here is the copy and paste from their site:
Size(s):
45/22 - 145
47/22 - 145
49/22 - 145
51/22 - 145
51/22 - CBL
45/22 - CBL
47/22 - CBL
49/22 - CBL
But I agree the Panto looks close too. I can't wait til AZ Smith jumps on this case.

AH! There it is. Hidden in with the rest. I was just looking at the bottom. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Hey, it also appears that the Berkshire Chase English Beaufort 2's are available in both Blond Gold and Chestnut Gold. The BOIC's that HF had were the "Blond gold." The offering we're all getting now was the "Chestnut." Maybe the Berks in the "Blond" are closer to what Harry originally had vs. the "Chestnut...."
Here's a link to the Berkshire page from Frames Direct....

This is terrible, I was just to be in need of a pair of BOIC Frames!!

Looks like I will have to go with the alternative now.

I just ordered a pair of the Berkshire Chase English Beaufort 2 in the Blonde Gold.
Regardless of BOIC's status, a backup pair of glasses is a wise thing to have.
When they arrive, I will post all my findings here.

Pyro.

I was talking to somebody online about what's been going on with BOIC. They started to ponder if I really received a pair of glasses from BOIC or if I just received a different brand.
I never really looked close enough for any markings. I had to take this pic of the earpiece to prove to him (and myself) that I indeed got what I paid for.

well that's a darn shame. I better get some of those. I don't know much about BIOC, can you order just the frames and have a local Optomistist (can't spell today) put the lenses in? Or is that what they have you do anyway?

The procedure is fairly well documented at the main gear site. Framesdirect.com is a good source for the frames and they provide a very good price compared to the normal retail price. In addition they can fill the prescription for you.

When I was on the phone with FramesDirect last week, I asked, "Is what I read on the Internet true? That BOIC is going out of business?" She said, "Yes, it's true." "That's a shame," I replied.
I remember they (BOIC) took some time off in October. I wonder if that and this recent news were related.
Hopefully, things will make a turn for the better.

It was actually the end of September and that affected my order. It wasn't BOIC, it was the EXCLUSIVE AND SOLE DISTRIBUTOR of BOIC in the States. He was on vacation for 10 days. Once he came back, they processed my order for the 49/22 frames.
It's still a surprise for a company that's been around as long as BOIC to go under. I must say, most of the suppliers for Raiders are still around, or at least the people associated with it.

I just received a call from Candice at Frames Direct - Per "Don" at BOIC, they are not going out of business. The manufacturing plant that makes the IJ style glasses will not be making them any longer. I've just changed my order to the Berkshire Chase Blonde style - I will let everyone know when I receive them. Per Frames Direct, the only difference in the two glasses is that the Berkshires are not gold filled.

So BOIC's plant that made the Indy Glasses is shutting down... does that mean that BOIC will have a different plant make them, or just close down that "style?" Hmmmm.........

From what I was understanding, that model will no longer be made. At least that's the word this week. I'm getting this from someone with authority from Frames Direct who is getting it from the California distributor "Don".

OK. Does anyene have any clue if BOIC also provided the glasses for the TOHT character? It would make sense since there were few pairs of glasses needed for the film. Can anyone dig up any info on this? Anyone?

I just received mine in the Blonde Gold - I think I am going to return them for the Chestnut - I think that color is more in line with the BOIC.

Indiana Dan informs me that he spoke to the people at Frames Direct and they put him through to the BOIC distributor. What has happened is that BOIC has had their glasses made by different companies to their specs. The manufacturer that makes the P3 has gone from making them well to becoming very inconsistent. They will try to find another manufacturer so there is hope. The same thing happened during the 70's and it took BOIC 5 years to find another manufacturer that made them satisfactory. It's better than nothing. Cheers
PS- I'm selling my pair for $500. (just kidding)

Sorry about the delay - I'm working on Pics - My optometrist who is very familiar with BOIC - thought my Bershire Chases were BOIC's. So we have an expert confirm that they are the same. Pics to follow.

The framesdirect website is somewhat misleading. Thanks to Sergei for the following information. The photograph of the Berkshires shown on the website is different from what you order. If you notice on the temples the BOICs have a half plastic piece on both sides. The berkshires of Pyroxenes do not, this is because you have to request them when you order them. Candice at framesdirect told me it was an additional $30. I told her that it shouldn't be fair for us to order a pair of glasses with the misleading photograph showing the accurate half plastic temples only to find that we have to pay an additional $30. just some FYI stuff I felt like posting. Sincerest Regards. Blaine

Yes, there seems to be a lot of misinformation. I leave it for AZ Smith to sort things out, since BOIC is UK based. Perhaps some more "gum shoe" work is required to get the staight messaging.

Bottom line - order the Panto 14k's - they are identical to the BOIC's - If fact, I would not be surprises if they made the BOIC's
A local supply!

FYI
I found out that my old optical shop carries the BOIC P3 in stock.
Unfortunately they are NOT in my current vision plan and the frames run about $240.00. Yikes! Out of plan, i can get $45 bucks covered...
I may at least go take a look and see how they size up on me.
