Call me stupid, but I'm wondering what I should do with my new US Wings jacket. Should I go ahead and wear it to break it in some or should I treat it with some type of weatherproofing/leather protectant. Basically, is it better to have it beat up before or after treatment? Thanks to the most knowlegeable Indy bunch anywhere!

I would have to agree with Indy Max. You should wear it everyday weather permits, then go inside, turn on the A/C and roll around on the floor in it. It's leather, not suede ( I know suede is leather, but..). Abuse it a little. When it's time to put 'er away for summer, add a little treatment of your choice and she'll be ready for next fall. Just don't hang it in plastic! 8)

Good God, Bink you're not suggesting sleeping with the jacket,...AND breraking it??? That's illegal in most states, ya know.

Considering we don't even know what KIND of leather it is, it's a bit hard to give an answer. :-k

My jacket is goat skin. I'd post a photo, but I don't know how to do it. My jacket is dark brown and not broken in at all, but I really enjoy wearing it, though I won't have much more time before the weather gets nice here in the Carolinas.

USW Goat Jacket

I got my USW goatskin in early Jan 07. I'm going with the "natural" distressing process. I have worn it as much as possible except on the coldest days here in PA. Exposed it to some rainy days too, and water beads right off. It's only now beginning to breakin and show some folds/creases to the back and sleeves. I'd wear yours in some before you do any treating or distressing.

There's not much you need to do to goatskin. After about a year (unless it's super stiff), put a light coating of either standard Pecards, or Pecards jell, and that will help in it's conditioning. Otherwise, goatskin is pretty much bullet proof.

I'm a huge advocate of bringing Vintage Style into current mainstream (because modern fashion is death and retro keeps getting cooler with time as a result...) and I encourage everyone on these sites to get their butts in gear (literally and figuratively) before going out to do something worth while.

Now that you have the jacket you've always wanted (and I assume a fedora, too) now you should go out and live the life you always wanted. With Great Gear comes Great Responsiblity - now that you can dress like a hero, be one. Go places you've never been, see things you've never seen before, do thing you've never done before...

IndyGear and Retrowear isn't just a hobby, it's a way of life.
