Washable Cotton or Screen-Accurate Wool Trousers?

Since I've been having a difficult time offering a consistant material for my Adventure Pants, I was thinking of doing a run of custom material for these. Now, the problem is what do I make???

Personally, I'd prefer having a 100% cotton twill (10oz probably) that is machine washable. I real pair of practical adventure pants but in a screen accurate twill and color. Otherwise, I could do a wool (or wool blend to save on money) which will be more screen accurate, but less practical as far as laundering goes. Since Noel Howard provides a pure wool option already at a higher price, this seems pointless to me. So... what is your opinion?

The next issue is color... how do I ensure I get it right? Everyone has their own opinion. What is closest? Anyone have a swatch of what they believe is 100% accurate? Pantone is no good in this case, as I don't believe they have the right shade in their book. Any ideas, feel free to post, PM or e-mail me.

I'm very close to doing this, and it will be a large run of cloth, so I've got to get it right first time out. Also, I will be tweaking my design of the pants a bit and releasing another version, dubbed "Raiders Pants" which will have dropped belt loops and military hemmed cuffs. The original "Adventure Pants" with standard loops and square hemmed cuffs will also still be available.

Kind regards,
Indy

I like the idea of a nice heavy cotton twill trouser but with Raiders stylings. I've avoided getting a more screen accurate pair of pants because of the wool care issue and I've been hoping someone would come along with a cotton twill in the right color.

I already have a pair of wool twill pants that make a good Indiana Jones costume pair of pants but I would still like something that would actually stand up to some adventure...but still fit the "Indy" look.

i agree with wolf. i have a pair of NH and one of platon's on the way. i have one of your pants in cotton and i think they are great as cleaning them is easy........ but would love to get something screen accurate with the right pocket flaps and colour.

the colour is difficult to find as everyone is looking at ford's pants through different monitor's. i see them as a greyish beige with a minute hint of green in them but others may see them different. i figure that you pause a scene from cairo (when he's in the sunlight) and match the colour there....hopefully on a hi-def monitor....then no one can really argue with the accuracey after that....just on how different they look on their screen

Put me in the 'cotton' group. I, too, like something that can be used on the road, and a easy to care for cotton is a fine choice...especially a pair with a watch pocket. (you KNEW that was coming, Indy!)

Would the cotton version be less expensive to buy?

If so, go with the cotton!

I'll throw in a vote for cotton, as well.

It looks like most are leaning towards cotton (so am I), so I'll look into this some more and let you know. I'm not sure how this will affect pricing, as this will be a custom run of cloth...

Indy

You're talking about the watch pocket, right? Indy? Hello?

HIGH regard!

Michaelson, I'm sure I've already told you in another thread that, for you, I'd add a third leg to these trousers. What the third leg would be for is your own business , but yes, I'd do a pocket watch for you too. ;)

Kind regards,
Indy

We'll have to incorporate that into the upcoming jacket order, I believe. :D

No third leg needed, though. :-k

I'm thinking cotton is good too. With a work wardrobe of slacks and suits it gets costly to always send things to the cleaners. That's why i've moved to purchasing washable slacks now.

They are invaiably cheaper too. So if after being washed many times they get too worn out looking I can purchase a new pair and it would be te same cost as if I had bought a nice pair of wool.

I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with on this "Raiders" model!

That was politely put, Web, but to put it bluntly, some of us have bigger rear ends that need the extra room.

I'd assume that since his clothing is made to measure and you can specify cut/fit you could have it any way you'd like it.

I'm just hoping for an update!

Yes, since these are made to measure, you can request them as you like. They are sized based on waist, hips (which incorporates part of the seat), under-crotch, inseam, outseam, thighs, and general fit. That's a lot of customizable options. :D

As for the cotton trousers, no news yet. I've been too busy to really go full steam on these... but I will keep you posted with any updates.

Kind regards,
Indy

Cotton all the way. Wool is fine, but generally speaking if its actually heavy enough to withstand serious "adventuring" its not going to be suitable for warm weather wear.

What weight are the screen pants?

For many years adventuring I used tropical weight wool pants, Army surplus. I wore them fairly continuously for chilly days hiking, canoeing, and things like that and they wore very well. They looked pretty grotty, though, as I recall. I haven't had a pair for about 20 years. They stood up to wear here in NE far better than cotton twill. The only year I spent any significant time in the East was 1966, and I wore dungarees, which were pretty uncomfortable!

I've finally got some good cotton in an accurate color for use on these pants. It is a 9oz cotton twill in "camel". If anyone is interested, drop me a line. The price is the same as my standard materials, putting the pants at $95 (shipped).

Kind regards,
Indy

I believe what you're trying to say is

Now... that being said, I am updating everyone that this fabric is available now. I will post pics as soon as I have a pair made in this fabric. In the mean time, if anyone wants to commission a pair in this new fabric sight-unseen, feel free to contact me.

And... for whatever it's worth, here is a shot of the new cotton swatch on my "stone" cotton twill Adventure Shirt with point-blank flash:

Now, is it the same 9-11 oz cotton you already use or did you finally found something thick???

Give me a 16 oz fabric and I'm satisfied!

Henrik

No, it's a different fabric than what I have been offering. It's billed by the manufacturer as a "chino" fabric.

As for heavy weight fabric, the heaviest I have is 14oz.

but the all important question is....how do the pocket flaps look?....or did i miss something? :D

I'm hoping to get the flaps more accurate on the new pants, but won't have images, obviously, until the first new pair is finished...

why cotton

I voted cotton because i actually go camping a lot and wool is a bu##er to wash.
on the other hand when i lived in Norway wool was better even for underwear because it wicks away sweat (you do NOT want to get wet skiing in the cold) and wet wool it is 240 times more insulating than than wet cotton.
It's still a bu##er to wash!, though!

Cotton twill, practical and breathable.

What about a non-wrinkle cotton or cotton-poly blend? That would eliminate wrinkles and appear more like wool. Just my 2 cents.
