Anybody know anything about this fedora?

http://www.amazon.com/Scala-Wool-Felt-I ... &s=apparel

I'm thinking about getting it for a cheaper first fedora and it looks pretty nice. Just thought I'd ask. [/url]

Scala, eh? Based on the pic I would have sworn that was a Dorfman Pacific "official" Indy hat. It even has the "official" pin. Hmmm, I wonder if Scala is making these now? Or perhaps they are just reselling some DP's under their own name? Either way, $65-$75 is way too much for a wool felt hat. If you really like this hat, you can find it cheaper elsewhere online if you dig around a bit. It should only run you about $40 to $50. Then again, even that is too much for a wool felt, but at least you'd save about $20 or $30 bucks. If you wanna spend a bit more on something that is made better and looks better (in terms of an Indy fedora) then you should take a look at the Akubra Federation or the Jimmy Pierce Designs fedora. Both are more expensive than this Scala hat, but considering how much better the quality is on both the Akubra and JPD (they are both FUR felt, rather than wool and the JPD is custom made which is another plus), you'll know where that little bit of extra cash went. No matter what, I wish you luck!

Actually, DP owns Scala, so technically it is a DP, just mislabeled or under a different name. That picture is an overcirculated pic of a DP.

Ah HA! DP owns Scala, well, that clears up that little mystery. Thanks Parise!!!

thats the official lucasfilm licenced indiana jones hat. once stetson lossed their rights to produce hats for lucas, dorfman pacifica picked up the ball and produced these hats.....which are a favourate of rendering fisks from what i've read

not a great choice for screen accuracey. though the brim is cut dimensionally, the top bash is a tear drop crown instead of a center dent....and the last time i checked, ol' indy didn't have a monogram pin to tell people that was his hat.

not a great choice for durability considering it is wool felt. the shape is bound to degrade in wet weather....quite rapidly from what i hear.

the best bang for the buck on a good fed around these parts is the akubra federation from hatsdirect. do a search and ye will find.

what about this:

http://www.villagehatshop.com/jaxon_iconoclast.html

fur felt AND cheaper than the wool DP. looks like the dp because of the teardrop crown but in a way it looks better.....and it's not WOOL.
maybe it is a DP but they removed the pin on the ribbon

Actually, I've heard some great reviews on the Iconoclast, but again, it's not screen accurate. Too much taper and all that. Still, either The Akubra Federation or an AB would probably be the way to go.

You´re totally right, please don´t buy this hat  I have one and if it would be possible to travel trough time, I would make good that damage
Save a bit more and get a Akubra Federation, a Deluxe best
Those hats are great and screen accurate

Is the Iconoclast a good "close enough" to start out with, though? In other words, is someone that isn't a gear-head going to notice it's not an exact Indy fedora?

Also, I thought the Akubra Fed. or ABs weren't "close enoughs" but more genuine screen accurate replicas? Is this incorrect?

Looks like I was typing as you were posting. I definately don't like not getting what the picture shows. What makes this hat so bad, exactly? I may end up not getting a "close enough" and just go for the real thing, but I'm trying to put together a fairly cheap Indy outfit together right now so I'm still looking around.

Well, yes, the Akubra ARE more screen accurate, but come to you open crown, so you can put any bash YOU want to in them to make them any kind of fedora shape you please.

For the difference price, I'm afraid I, too, would suggest you bypass this and look at the Akubra simply due to the quality difference, and slight difference in price. You'll get a LOT more milage and use out of the Akubra than this Inoclast.

Usually I don't say one way or the other, but we're only talking a few more dollars for a standard Federation, and it stands head and shoulders over the one you link to.

The felt is not good so if it once wet it´ll slump and the colour isn´t beautiful.
If you don´t want a screen accurate and if you don´t want a hat which is able to folllow you on some adventures and looks quite good after that, than take a DP  it´s just my advise.

Thanks everyone. I've got the standard Akubra Federation (from Hatsdirect) down on my list for my "inexpensive" fedora. Gonna have to wait a bit before I can get it, though. Gotta get paid!

Good choice.

Oh yeah, the old 'waiting for payday' is a standard 'curse' for all of us, my friend.
