you're not fighting fair fedora! you can't make a raiders hat out of the current HJ and then compare it to a reblocked magnoli HJ.....that ain't a fair fight. i'll pull out my TOD HJ to even up the odds.....because those were the best indy hats anywas {diving roll under the plymouth}
beauty of hat though

This hat looks very different than the first one in the main Magnoli/HJ thread. Different blocks this time? Also, Todd's HJ's look much, much better than those tapered SAB ones.

That is what a difference in 1/2 inch in crown height does to a hat. The pic that Magnoli posted was the prototype that was too short!! I did not catch it until after I had cut the brim. Too late to go back then. The pics I posted is the same block, but with the right crown height. His pic depicted a hat I screwed up. My pic showed what the hat should have looked like. I had to learn how to work with this rabbit felt. FedoraThis hat looks very different than the first one in the main Magnoli/JH thread. Different blocks this time? Not being a connoseiur (sp?) mind you, I have to say, in my opinion, the Magnoli HJ just has something the SAB HJ doesn't, it might be the color in the lighting. Now for a silly question from a somewhat still newbie... are the brims on those really that large looking in person or is it just the camera playing a trick on my eye?

Seen from a particular perspective, we are all recycled. Recycled star dust, to wax poetic.Nice touch putting the recycle emblem in the photo That should help keep the beaver loving enviromentalists happy
Great hat by the way
You too, in time will join in the great circle of recycling. My view of the world, and nature is very anthropomorphic. I see beavers being put here by the Creator to make hats from. Beaver underfur will "felt" or mat naturally, without artificial help from stuff like mercury, or hydrogen peroxide. So to me, the felting nature of beaver fur was designed with beaver hats in mind. Rabbit underfur needs the chemical help to mat properly, so they are better for eating, rather than for hats. And they make nice soft fur collars for ladies jackets and coats. And do well in lining leather gloves.
On the other hand, if seen from a worm's perspective, we were put here to insure the survival of worms. Speaking of worms and perspective......how about the old saw that goes, "the early bird always catches the worm?" Well, seen from the worm's perspective, if the early bird always catches the worm, then I would say the worm should have stayed in bed!! Perspectives are tricky little devils. Fedora

Jee. Hard to believe that hat looks so much better after being re blocked by Steve. He usually ruins a good hat. Great idea sending it in for a re block. It looks fantastic!!!
Not to hijack this thread, but I thought it would be a good place to unveil the re block he did on my Federation. That's my usual bash that I do using Pagey's tutorial. I now love this hat almost as much as my AB. In many ways I like the way it looks better, but still not as comfortable.

It would make a great LC hat, or TOD hat, IF, the felt were stiffer. The felt as we receive it today is great for a Raiders fedora, but is severely lacking in the right blockshape to pull it off. The current block shape of the HJ really calls for the stiffer LC felt. It would then be what the original LC was, in felt and blockshape. And it would not **** in so much on the top when you put in the top crease, giving less taper than this soft felt does. The current HJs have the most Raiders accurate felt that I have seen out of HJ since I saw Mike's Lee Kepler HJ. In fact, this may very well be the exact same felt that was on the Raider's fedora. If not, it is very close. FedoraThe SAB doesn't even look like a bad Indy hat, but the reblock is great!

Doggone it all, just what I needed, another COW member coming up with a way to seperate me from my money.That federation looks good! I guess that will be my next move. To offer a Raider's Federation. Might be nice to have a Raiders Federation, and put a 150 dollar price on it. That would be a hat that the college kids could afford. Fedora
