Loden beaver felt Fedora??

Post by Darrell »

Hello Everyone,

Has anyone ever seen any hats made of the loden color? I am not sure but I think this color changes color under different lightening and if it does, what color ribbon would you put on a hat like this?

I have been searching the web for fur felt hat blanks/bodies and so far I have located two websites. Does anyone know of any place that sells good fur felt hat blanks? :?:

Thank you for your time and help,
Darrell

That one is Loden - it's the Fed Deluxe.

Hi Shane,

The hat on that page looks to be brown, but the color loden is listed as a dark olive color. Does the Loden color change with lighting?

I can only speak for the Akubra Federation Deluxe as I currently own one. I have no idea why they call the color of the Fed Deluxe "Loden", because it is as brown as anything, not green in the least. Maybe "Loden" means something different down under? To give you an idea of how Un-loden the Fed Deluxe loden color is, here an example of my own hat under different lighting conditions. It may look light brown in some, dark brown in others, sometimes even more reddish brown or even gray, but it NEVER looks green... :?:

You bet, I was always under the impression that Loden was a shade of green. To further that theory, the pants I have on right this minute are from LL Bean, and they are listed as "Loden" and yes, they're green. But not a dark olive...more of a light, faded, olive drab. But I had never seen anything Loden that wasn't some sort of green color until I bought my Fed Deluxe!

No problem! Though I suspect it may not help Darrell much, if he's looking for a green hat.

Thank you posting the photos of your hat GCR, that is a nice looking hat, the photos of your hat make the color even more interesting. :)

I ran a search on google for Loden dark olive green images and from what I have seen there seems to be many variations of Loden and some of the images that I looked at labeled as dark olive green, the color looked like a dark brown to me. I guess the word Loden is just a lable for green colors. :?
I could be wrong but I think the word Loden is German. Does anyone here speak German? :?:

You might ask your teacher about the word, it maybe used to describe something. As it turns out loden can be purchased in a brown color, the Federation Delux is a dark brown color and changes with the amount of light the material is exposed to.

I asked my teacher about the word "loden", she said it isn't a German word.

Ron addressed this years ago right here. Down Under, Loden does not mean green. I can't recall why it doesn't, but that is what we were told. Hope this helps. Fedora

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

lo·den
n.

1. A durable, water-repellent, coarse woolen fabric used chiefly for coats and jackets.
2. A deep olive green.

[German, coarse fabric, from Middle High German lode, from Old High German lodo.]

Hmmm, so Loden doesn't mean green Down Under? That's strange... :-k

I wonder if "Mid-brown" means green down there?

I was thinking maybe they got the colors mixed up on the Fed and Fed Deluxe?

I know that we have had some interesting color debates, usually involving gray and brown, and discussed the effect lighting has on colors. This phenomenon presented itself to me just this week. We have had some very cold weather in my area lately, and I ordered a brown Polartech fleece jacket to layer underneath my brown Barbour jacket that I wear when I have to be outside teaching the recruits how to drive.

It had just arrived, and I wore it for the first time to go into town and pick up a few things. I walked in a store that was very well lit, and I happened to notice that my new fleece jacket was green. I mean it was really green. I looked at it and started to panic, and thought that maybe I didn't look at it good enough at home, and maybe they had sent me the wrong color jacket. I was beginning to think maybe I had received a green jacket instead of brown.

I remembered some of our discussions in this regard, and reassured myself that it could just be the lighting inside the store. At least I was hoping that I wasn't going crazy.

When I got home, my jacket returned to it's very "Indy fedora" brown. I couldn't believe my own eyes, that my jacket had gone from very brown to very green and back to very brown. I guess, seeing is not always believing.
