Bernardo's Whips

I recieved my first really good whip this weekend! It is a 10' Indy TOD/LC style Roo hide whip made by Bernardo Del Carpio.

Let me just say that Bernardo's craftsmanship is immaculate and the whip looks as great as it feels... i have seen many photos of Bernardo's work but I was not prepared for the tightness of plaiting and the overall quality.

I don't know if his work was always this good or if it has gotten better through his brief visit with David Morgan, but i can definitly recommend his work.

His prices are quite good and he can build whips in Kip (calf) or roo..

The best thing about my new whip was the opportunity to communicate with Bernardo. He is humble and offers fantastic customer service.

One example would be the material that my whip is made of - when I placed my order, I decided to go with kip hide... It was less expensive and offered the next best material to roo. However, the hides Bernardo recieved from the tannery were too thin... He could have made my whip out of materials that he felt were not up to his usual standards, but instead, scraped that whip and waited for better kip. The next batch was also sub par, so instead of making me wait, Bernardo made my whip from roo at a substantial discount.

Bernardo is also very open to specs... I didn't send him any photos, but described a TOD/LC style with tapered handle, vintage morgan spacing between knots and robust thong transition in the ten foot length. Those were my specs and that is exactly what I got!

If you are considering buying a premium Indy style whip, I recommend that you drop a line to Bernardo.... You will not be sorry!

I will post pics soon and Bernardo said he would also post some pics of my whip.

Thanks Bernardo!

When you purchase a whip from Bernardo, you not only get a beautifully rendered whip, you also get a friend.

Thank you all, you're very kind. :D

Here's a few more pics:

This is a Raiders style whip made in roo, 8 foot long. It's going to its new home in Japan.

A close-up of the thinner and almost untapered handle.

A comparison pic next to my Morgans. The Raiders handle is slightly thinner, following Sergei's measurements of the screen used Raiders whip. The ring knot is placed closer to the end of the spike, giving the appearance of a longer handle.

Finally, a custom roo Indy whip with a 12 inch heavy handle. This one is going to Canada.

Bernardo,
I think our friend B.W will be very happy with that 8ft. I particularly like the strand widths! Wish I could do such neat knots too. Very nice!

I can only join in the applause. Yesterday I got a good look at two Bernardo whips (8 and 10 foot) at a free ranging gearhead. I had my 8 foot Morgan with for comparison and Bernardos whips are a close match both in looks and quality. Great whips

Just to add one more voice to the chorus, Bernardo makes a fine whip. That is one of his in my avatar, an 8 footer. Congrats, Coronado, on your new whip.

You know I’ve been at this whip thing for a long time and over the years I think for the most part I’ve gotten pretty good at being able to tell who made what whip just by looking at it. But there have been a few times when I looked at some of Bernardo’s Indy bullwhips and thought to myself at first that’s got to be one of David Morgan’s bullwhips. Usually the quick give away was Bernardo fall’s had a slight blue tint to them. But now that it looks like he’s using whitehide and I really have to look at his whips much closer! Amazing work my friend, keep it up.

Sounds like I'll know where to go when I'm ready to buy my first whip.

you have chosen wisely GM.

as a stickler for having the real deal when it comes to gear, i've debated this issue many times for my next whip:

buy a david morgan whip or buy a bernardo whip?

i decided to go with bernardo because:

a) david morgan will not make a whip with the same specs as back in the 1980's (long handle)
b) david morgan's work is charged at a premium
c) bernardo was tutored by david morgan and even made a whip with the man
d) and most importantly, bernardo makes one fine screen accurate product at an amazing price.
