Put your hat on just like Harrison Ford!!! Oh boy!!!

I got these clips from the making of dvd which clearly show two things. One, HF put his own hat on, I think most of the time. Two, that nobody taught him hat ettiquette because he grabs it by the front pinch.
It's no secret that we see him putting his own hat on as any one of us can see it on the dvd, but I think it has soooo much to do with the look of the hat. Not everything of course, but one aspect.
We'll start with
'How to put on your Raiders hat', by everyone's favorite hero...your's truely, Harrison Ford.
We start out with him pinching the brim tightly as it shows here to set it in. My guess is HF liked the pinch and because the hats were new he really hat to give it a go and really press that pich in hard. Just my observation.
Of course, this is not good for your hat, mind you. For those who didn't already know.
Next, we see him putting ont he hat by way of the front pinch. Again, a no-no if you love your hat.
Once on we see both hands grab the back of the brim and pull down flat.
A slight pull down in the center using both hands. A slight adjustement.
Then a good pull down on the center brim with both hands.
Some minor adjustements.
Importante! Grab the brim in back tightly with your fingers at the base of the ribbon with both hands and pull up with your hands, not your fingers.
Then grab the outer edge of the back brim and pull up wth both hands to give you the back, upward swoop, but do not let go.
Following through from the last step, a slight pull towards the back.
Finally, a gentle upward swoop on the front/middle brim with the palm of both hands, going front to back.
We happy?
Yeah...we happy.

So why didn't he do that with the hats in the other movies??

....because in the other movies he didn't wear an adventurebuilt
he probably wasn't use to wearing fedoras is my guess. i remember playing with my first hat all the time....and now i don't....unless i was sticking the crown over the steam kettle!!!! (caught ya lookin tone! ha ha ha).....

How does using the pinch actually damage the hat other than causing wear through repetition?

Wha...?
I've been told that if you really mash down on the front center crease that you are breaking ther natural fibers in the felt which will cut down on it's life, especially if you always handle the hat by the front crease.
I was always told it's ok to bend it but never to crease it hard.
I think Steve can answer this better than I, tho.

I always love the behind the scenes pics and features. Sometimes they are better than the movie itself. Great pic's!

From the behind scenes, Ford always seems rather conscious about his gear in general, and the hat specifically I think. Small tweaks all along... For continuity or for looking and feeling good in the part? What do you guys think?

Yeah, that is great. I love this stuff.
I wonder what size of a hat Ford wears and what size those hats were? The hat Ford is wearing in several of those shots looks a little bit to big for his head.

I like those first pix. It's almost exactly how I was putting my hat on all the time til I was educated here on proper hat etiquitte. Cept for the bending and folding of the hat. Great pix overall of the hat.

Great pics!
Have you noticed the bag strap buckle?
Seems as if they handed Ford annother bag with a different buckle. Maybe a stunt bag...

I realize that camera angles and lighting can play tricks with one's perception of the "HAT," remember the brown fedora everyone thinks is gray/grey, (where's Michaelson and the Mopar when you need him
), but I think these behind the scene pics tend to prove what Steve, and I think Lee Keppler, (please correct me if I am wrong), have been saying for a while. The ROTLA was not as tall as people tend to think. Look at the Cairo pics. Compared to my first PB, the height of that hat looks like a Dorfman.

Notice that the proprtions of some pics are not correct. The Cairo pics are too wide!

Too wide??? What do you mean? I see nothing wrong with the proportions at all.

I dont see any problem with proportion !!?? and yes, yes the crown is not so tall....it is, again, a perspective effect and camera angle effect....

OK, how do you 'correct' them and how can you tell they are even out or proportion to begin with? I mean, all I did was take them directly from the dvd and edited them down to a perfect square.
If you can pm me some pointers on how to prevent this from happening, I'd appreciate it.

I thought the proportions of the original pics looked good. Maybe they looked off to some, because of the perceived caricature of the hat that has thrived through the yeqrs. When the pics are "corrected," the hat starts to take on more of the characteristics of what everyone thought the hat was.
Perception is reality.
