New Vegan

I've noticed this isn't the most vegan friendly place in the world, however, I am interested in any inventive ways people might have found to make vegan gear. I'm not out to convert anyone, your life is your life. I don't use wool because in some places the skin around the sheep's rear is cut off to prevent infection from flies, but often results in infection (from flies, doh!) and death of the sheep. I also don't use silk because the caterpillars have to be boiled alive in their cocoons in order for the silk to be usable. I don't care if Indiana Jones kills people OR animals because HE IS A FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Other than that I won't be saying anything else about it unless directly asked.

I'm particularly looking for something to make the jacket from. The amount of available materials is increasing, but it's still hard to find something that wares and wears like leather. Total bummer on my part.

The fedora wouldn't be impossible to make from some cloth, even the cotton felt you can buy for kids costumes and stuff, if you starch it enough?

I'm not worried about shoes or belts - you can get those at the Wally World. The pants and shirt are easy enough to duplicate in cotton.

Vegan whips are available at vegan "toy" shops. :? Although I've only found cat-o-nine-tails and a flogger-of-17. I also hear you can make them from tire tread and tubing. . . :whip:

You can also make whips from nylon and in some cases parachute cord with good results. As for the rest of it, I don't know how to help ya there.

This isn't the first time this discussion has wandered through these hallowed halls.

The only thing about the straw PB is it has a leather sweat band. Theyy might consider swapping it out for a cotton one if you talk to Joe Peters. Otherwise, a very nice fedora.

Peter Botwright was experimenting with a non-leather material for a jacket, but the first prototype (according to him) was a failure. I don't know if he made any further attempts, and the last I heard of it was late last summer.

i've vegan for 11 years. i'vd never worn leather or anything like that. but i went with for the real leather gear. a good leather jacket will last you the rest of your life. i've gone through vegan shoes and belts like they were made of paper. i decided if i'm going to do the gear, i was going to do it right. i also think for me, after being vegan for so long it's just become a habit and not much else. maybe i'm just old a bitter. good luck in your search regardless!

Very true. Unfortunatly my fiance is also vegan and I'd hear it every time I wore my jacket. I actually did talk him into letting me by the Disney wool hat once. It's more the challenge than anything. I sew, so I'd kinda like to find a material that would hold up as good - or almost as good - as leather.

I heard somebody was - probably while wandering through the archives here.

Is the straw hat really that good? or does it look just like straw?

and Strider, Where would I get parachute cord? I'd never even thought of something like that. What's it like?[/quote]

It looks like straw, but it may be a viable alternative.

There was a dude here who was making whips out of parachute cord for awhile, and I believe it's a standard option when having a nylon whip made. I know Snakewhip Sable has a good nylon whip (I have a leather one...), so maybe he can answer your questions better than I can. Hope I helped a little bit! :)

Someone was talking about hemp gear awhile ago.
Try a hemp whip? If it doesn't work you can still take it home and smoke it.

Yeah, I'm surprised VP didn't post a couple links.

One of the posts was made by me :)

I'm a vegitarian for around 10 years now, but I do wear a leather jacket and leather shoes, because the fake stuff, just ... it's gone before you know it.

feronia,

Here are some links for nylon whips. I just did a quick google search. I don't remember where Snakewhip Sable got his nylon, but I can tell you from experience that his nylon whip cracks LOUD!

Jabahutt70 is a member here who makes nylon whips out of parachute cord. I have one and it is a quality whip and a lot of fun to crack. If you contact him, I'm sure you can get one made in brown to look Indy-ish. There is also a member called Nylonwhips who was making them, but he may have switched to leather. I haven't seen one of his, so I can't give a review. The nylon whips have the advantage that you can use them in wet weather and not worry about ruining it. They're also a bit cheaper than leather.
