amber shellac

Post by winrichwhips »

Here's a 10 ft kangaroo Indy whip I finished yesterday. I put a coat of amber shellac on it.

Some of you may have seen earlier posts from me where the natural tan whips were really light colored. The amber shellac is my attempt to get a nicer color.

Mmmmmm nice :P . I like it.
How did you apply the shellac? I used a cotton cloth, that way I could control the shellac better and only apply a thin layer.

K

K,

I used a brush, but I tried to load it as lightly as possible with the shellac. I only put one coat on this whip (two coats on the knob), though next time I think I'll put on two light coats hoping to get more even coverage.

Will this stuff come off on your hand if your palm starts sweating?

I've never heard of shellac coming off on someone's hand due to sweat. Shellac seems to only dissolve in alcohol or mineral spirits; I don't believe it's water soluble.

A lot of whips are shellacked, it just happens that this shellac is tinted.

Most shellac comes off due to abrasion. With this whip I could see any area where the shellac wears off, dirt and grease will darken the leather.

Looks good Adam, I love that new whip shine and like the way the amber shellac darkened it up a bit.

So what you are saying is if you are hammered and out cracking it might come off in your hands. That is if you drink enough for it to come through your pores......we have all been there im sure........

Coronado3,

I honestly don't know how the amber shellac will affect the darkening as I've never seen an old whip that had amber shellac put on it. The shellac does let sun through, so I'd think that exposure to the sun would still darken the whip.

Congrats on your Bernardo whip!

Actually the shellac is not tinted but is the natural color. To get a clear or white shellac, the natural amber is bleached. Various colors of shellac are important to the woodworker to aid in highlighting the grain of finely figured woods.
