amber shellac
Here's a 10 ft kangaroo Indy whip I finished yesterday. I put a coat of amber shellac on it.
Some of you may have seen earlier posts from me where the natural tan whips were really light colored. The amber shellac is my attempt to get a nicer color.

I've never heard of shellac coming off on someone's hand due to sweat. Shellac seems to only dissolve in alcohol or mineral spirits; I don't believe it's water soluble.
A lot of whips are shellacked, it just happens that this shellac is tinted.
Most shellac comes off due to abrasion. With this whip I could see any area where the shellac wears off, dirt and grease will darken the leather.

Coronado3,
I honestly don't know how the amber shellac will affect the darkening as I've never seen an old whip that had amber shellac put on it. The shellac does let sun through, so I'd think that exposure to the sun would still darken the whip.
Congrats on your Bernardo whip!

Actually the shellac is not tinted but is the natural color. To get a clear or white shellac, the natural amber is bleached. Various colors of shellac are important to the woodworker to aid in highlighting the grain of finely figured woods.winrichwhips wrote:I've never heard of shellac coming off on someone's hand due to sweat.
