Yep, it is a doubled edged sword. Hemp was and IS one really tough material, and before folks found out it made an interesting choice for, uh, recreational purposes, it was used for centuries for just about everything due to it's tough nature, easy access and inexpensive processing.

It's a legitimate question. To bad hemp has become an illegal item unless grown under controlled means, as it does have a Jekyll/Hyde existance now.

True. Problem is you can't get the one without growing the other...therefore, it's ALL considered a controlled substance.

On the serious side of this....Hemp is, as already stated in this thread, a most durable and long-lived fabric! I own two Tilley T5 hats that are hemp and they are indeed tough -- they, I am quite certain, will outlast me! I know that there are several sites in the net that offered hemp products -- I haven't viewed any of them lately, but as a recall -- lots of hemp purses, bags and the like, plus caps, hats, etc. And, if memory serves me, I am pretty sure that Orvis, or someone like them & their products, had a sport coat that was made of hemp. This actually is a viable topic and should probably be further researched. W>

Though not 'Indy accurate', the shirts and trousers offered by U.S. Wings are about the toughest material I'VE ever come across in terms of taking wear and tear. You have to be careful not to throw them in a hot dryer after a washing , though. The one and only shirt I had shrank a full size. That was just after they were offered, so hopefully that problem was solved. Those things are made tough, though!

Commercial hemp has a very low level of THC (The stuff that gets you high) You would need to chain smoke 10 or more cigarettes made from hemp buds to get the buzz of low grade marijuana.
The only reason it can still be illegal to grow is the power of the cotton and paper industries in conjunction with the stupidity of the DEA.

Somehow, information like this, coming from a community member calling himself 'Rev. Chuck', seems wrong somehow.

The reasons for outlawing any of it in the first place was all political and racism and very, VERY dumb if you ask me.

It's proven how many products and people can benefit from it. It's just sad too how many people have been thrown in jail for smoking one joint. Remember Robert Mitchum? They made a political example out of him.

What I found very interesting was that it was made legal again sometime in the early 70's, I believe, but then after only a few short years was back on the illegal list.

In any case, I dig 100% cotton. If I could find hemp clothes that were as comfortable as cotton I'd look into it, but I haven't found any. Back in the 90's the hemp movement arose and you could find hemp everything for a while and it was all pretty course, like wool. That bothers me. *scratch...scratch*
