I have had several people ask about bound edges. I had a singer 108 bound edge machine in my shed at the house that I brought to the store this morning and set up. I grabbed on of my indy samples off the wall and here is what came out.

It is an indy, complete with deminsional brim, that has been bound with 7/8" ribbon matching the bow.

That is really superb....had no idea one could bind a hat that was deminsionaly cut! I have always fatasized about such a beast, but never seen one put into practice. That is really cool...nice touch! W>

I LOVE bound edged hats. Will you be adding this to your website as a service now, JP? I know a black hat in my stable that could use this kind of addition.

I sure will. it will be $25 option on hats I make, to to have it put on if I do not have to flange the brim first. If I do flange, bind, and recrease, it will be $45. Don't have a pic yet, but I also did a 4 ligne(about 3/8") binding on a western hat also. So I can do the open road style hat.

Marc, yes I do, but it is much more expensive(starts at $100), and no garantee on wait time. The bigger the brim, the higher the cost.

I'm one of the ones that asked JP about the bound brim. I debated which hat I wanted first..a bound brim Indy hat, as in the photo, or a late 40's Howard Hughes type hat, which is the one I settled on.


By the way, this hat SUPPOSEDLY was a Herbert Johnson!

Well, than the 30Euro I charge for a vintage ribbon hand stitched bound brim aren't as bad as I was told.

I have people ask me why so much all the time. that is at least 12 to 15 hours worth of work, on a western hat it is more like 25 to 30. When you split the cost by the hours it isn't a whole lot.

That's the thing. Many people think these operations are done in a couple of minutes!!! To me, doing the bound brim on a homburg, or pencil rolled brim is something that fascinates me. Especially the binding that only has visible stitching on one side of the brim. Fedora

Depends on the weight of the hat. To thin a felt, sure...the weight of the watch will keep it on my head in high winds.

Problem is, it would be more like asking Curly of the Three Stooges for the time! I'll pull out two different pocket watches, then refer to the watch on my wrist for an average.
