Burlington Coat Factory strikes again!

Just a "heads-up" to anyone with a Burlington Coat Factory in their area. I was in my local BCF earlier today and while looking for a new pair of gloves (non-Indy) I came across a stash of various hats. Most of these looked to be of the Tonak / Huckel variety that were around about 2 years ago. If anyone wants a cheap, and I do mean CHEAP (not really in terms of quality, but quite literally price) FUR-felt hat, this is the way to go. Most of the hats I saw were marked in the $12 to $20 dollar range. And to top it all off, I saw one particular hat (the one that caught my attention first) that would be of interest to anyone looking for a decent Indy style hat. It was brown in color, comparable to the Indiana Miller but slightly less red, with a black ribbon that looked to be about 1 1/2 inches. The brim was probably around 2 1/2 all around, but might have been a little wider. The crown was somewhat short and pre-shaped into a center-dent with the very relaxed pinch. Not screen accurate, exactly, but better, to my eye, than a Wool-Felt Dorfman Pacific, and less money, too! They only had ONE in the BCF I was in, and it was a size "small". It was so cheap, I would have picked it up if it had fit. It had no liner and a cloth sweatband. If you live near a BCF, and you want a decent Indy-like hat for under $20 bucks to either add to your collection, to experiment on or to replace your old wool-felt hat, have a look and let us know what you find!

Dang. It never ceases to amaze me how good that hat looks. I never would have guessed that was a BCF hat unless you said so. Still kinda looks like a "kangaroo" colored Peters Bros. Excellent work!

I puchased a hat from Burlington, but I gave it to my little cousin when I got my DP. The Burlington hat wasn't at all screen accurate, to crown was too short and the brim was too wide. The color was a nice, rich brown w/ a black ribon. It was $11 bucks I think.

Wow, you can really see the curvature of the QM in that pic, with the bow in the background. Nice pic..

A few years ago, I reblocked a few of the large ones, the taller crowned variety that you could find. I discovered Tonak must make some good felt going by what I saw. And that stuff was the low quality felt from that company. It was better than Hatco dress felt, or so I seem to recall. Marc told me that Tonak had one of the best fur blenders in the world, although he never gets to use his expertise these days. I think they only do rabbit and hare. What a waste of talent! Fedora

Just repeated the words of one of the old timers I talked to (same guy who helped me developing the Marc Kitter Treatment TM). But right you are my friend: it's a terrible waste of talent!

I went BCF earlier today and purchased a fedora like the one GCR described. Later on when I got home I took off the ribbon from my DP and sewed it on to my new BCF fed. The ribbon that came w/ the BCF fed was a 1in. black ribbon w/out a bow. Thats why I switched it out. I would love to post some pics but I dont know how to. :?

What a surprise.

Does anyone have a link that shows a bit more???

BCF Hats

Hello everyone,

Posting here in the Club for the first time, I noticed this thread and since I have an affinity for BCF hats, I though I'd offer someone shots of a brown fedora that at one time had a larger black ribbon, and would have made a pretty good Indy fedora likeness, until I played with the bash, changed to thin ribbon. It originally cost $16.98 plus tax. It claimed on the tags to be Fur Felt, but a friend thinks it was blended felt. Rabbit meets lamb. I'm more inclined to other ways to create the hats I like, but I'll always give BCF a look now and Image

No, that's about all they've ever had. It is one of their downfalls considering all the stuff they sell.

I know that this is an old topic, but I thought I'd share
these pics w/ you all. This hat is a BCF fed and I
took off the ribbon it came w/ and replaced it w/
the DP ribbon. Tell me what yall think.

That is a nice color. I wish I could find that color at my local store.
They always seem to have every color but...

Like if I have seen my own Tonak, the only brand available in shops here, in Slovakia :)

Only thing that makes me wonder is the price: my has cost about $30, two years since have passed...

I swung by BCF this wknd after seeing this thread popup...son of a gun, there was one, and it's a large! Just a touch big, w/ a tiny turn it fits (and warps in crazy ways). Too bad it's not the nice light color of Dalexs above (is that 'pecan'?), which I was really looking for...but ended up w/ a brown, just a bit greener than my AB, w/ a one-inch black ribbon. Open bash, a bit tall (a bit tapered, but what the heck...) ...basically it doesn't need to be UNstyled at all, almost like a blocked blank body, no bash.

And it's got a a BIG, thick, stiff brim on it...I'm tempted to try to make a Quatermaine hat from it (League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen)...this might be fun, and worht a $20 experiment. And then I'll know what NOT to do when I find the color I REALLY wanted. ;)

Guess I'll start digging around...I think I have to sand the fur off first (it's wooly looking!)...I'll post before and after at some point. Lots of studying to do!

Dalexs - I came home with it, big flat brim, open bash...looked like a big brown Hamish hat...and my wife said "oh, NO, you are NOT wearing that farmer hat in public!" heeheehee...she thought that's how I wanted it. :D

It's got a simple fabric sweatband, no liner. (Mine, anyway.)

Not scared away a bit. Actually, the church I serve is using a VBS program using an Indiana Jones theme with a character called Dakota Joe, who wears a fedora and a leather jacket. imagine that! And yours truly, the pastor, gets to be Dakota Joe and I just happen to have a brown BCF fedora to wear with my leather jacket. It's no one's AB, but I've found that any brimmed hat in most people's minds is an Indy hat. If I get some pics, and I'm sure there will be some, I'll post them. ("Vanity, vanity, all is vanity") Nice to see everyone's staying enthused about Indy! Can't wait for the new film to come out!

Hm, maybe I'll swing by BCF this weekend. I'm sure any Fed I find there would be better than the Mayser I've got.
