Hi folks,

Got my first Indy Style whip, and it's a beaut! It's a Russell Schultz with an eight point finish at the keeper. I ordered it from WSP.
Breaking this gorgeous ten footer in has been quite the learning experience for me. Naturally, an enhanced appreciation for bullwhips in general became part of the program. I have owned a few whips in the past, and consider myself an accomplished handler, but nothing could prepare me for the enlightenment that came with graduating to this finely crafted and superbly engineered item. Prior to getting the "Indy", I had a cowhite ten strand froom Cattle Baron Leather Company in San Antonio Texas. I put that one through the ringer for some twenty years. I even swung on it more times than I care to recount! I'm certainly glad I got that out of my system, because the respect that the Indy whip commands is delivering returns that are immesurable. It handles like a dream. It cuts through the air with all the grace of a swan, and it delivers such an authoritative CRACK!!
I have a question about the keeper, though. I noticed recently that right below the knot, the core strand started to peek out through the braid. That strand ends right below the knot, and I can't tell whether that's intentional, or whether I snapped it at some point. All the plait strands are intact however, and I have not noticed any undue stretching at that point. Sorry I don't have pictures to illustrate this, but I guess I'm asking whether or not the core strand (which is dark brown) should run through the fall loop as well, or should it terminate just before the keeper leaving just the plait strands holding the fall on?
Thanks for indulging. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I thought I'd give you a hand with the pictures.... that 2nd one is a great action shot!

I can't help you with the question about the keeper, but I also have a matching pair of Russell Schultz whips (not the Indy kind ~ I have the John Brady edition). They really are AWESOME whips! I love them, and they are very easy to crack.

Stay safe with your lessons, enjoy your new whip, and welcome to the COW boards!

Thanks for the assist, USNBA.
After my Dad logged on & saw the pix, he could only imagine I was whipping dollar signs! Not to worry, bill-fold is holding together.......Hear me baby? Hold together...

I have a pair of Schultz stockwhips with 8-plait points that do the same thing at the fall hitches (what I think you're calling the keeper). I think Russell ends the core at the fall hitches is to keep this part of the whip from getting too bulky.

Weird....
First, welcome aboard...
Second, I'm not sure why those pictures don't post properly.

I wasn't aware of it, but the software may have some built in function that doesn't allow you to hotlink with less then so many posts.

Who knew.... :-k

Thanks All!
The jacket is a Wested Raiders lambskin purchased new and worn right into the ground. The shoes are Alden's and if I might say, the color of the whip compliments them quite well. Now if I can just wear it all at the office

Hey, I've worn everything but the gun and the whip at my office. The gun and the whip stay safely IN my office, along with the Grail Diary, the golden idol, a Sankara stone, the Cross of Coronado, etc. (The folks in my office do, however, think I'm crazy . . .)
