OK, I've turned the hat now

Post by Fatdutchman »

Heres the JP/Miller hat turned now. Quite simple to do, actually. The front pinch on the hat looked SOOO nice, that I hated to undo it! But, I went for it. Just wet down the hat and redid the pinch and crease and let it dry. I did use a little steam, but not much, and it probably wasn't necessary anyway. And, I know, it still "looks too small"...believe me, it's just a matter of perspective being shot at arm's length with a small digital camera. When I look at myself in the mirror, the hat looks just the right size.

I agree! I'm glad you're happy with your results, dutchman. As long as the hat looks right to YOU, that's what matters.

I'm fairly happy with it...especially considering that this was the salvaging of a hat that otherwise was no count.

I WILL admit, especially after foolin' around and really lookin' at it, that for my face, I could stand a hat with a bit larger proportions...even though it fits my head, it doesn't fit my face as well... I always knew that the brim was too narrow...

I'm gonna make this my work hat. It's gonna get dirty and that'll get it lookin' more "authentic"!

My gray one is a bit oversize, and I have thin foam in the band. It's a much "fuller" hat anyway, always was, and it does look better on me...but, it's not brown!!!

I guess I'm finally going to put in for the AB...

You have a wide face. I generally ask for facial shapes, or a pic so I know how to cut the brim on the sides. A wider face needs more brim, at least to my eyes. Also, if I were making a hat for you, I would use one of my wider blocks.(round oval) Guys with larger faces need a wider hat in order to bring everything into proportion. Otherwise it looks like the hat is too small. It all about the proportion. One size does not fit all. Adustments have to be made for thin faces and wide faces. Fedora

The brim looks ok to me, it's the crown that seems small. Although adding to the brim width might offset that somewhat.

Still, looks good! The turn makes it look a lot more "cairo" indy-esque. I didn't bother turning mine and it looks a lot less "informal" than the Cairo indy version. That's ok by me, though, since I can still wear it as a dress hat. But I still may end up getting another brown specifically to do a turned look.

I'm still fiddlin' around with it. The felt is VERY pliable. When I turned the hat, it developed the slightest amount of taper. I steamed it on each side and pushed and worked it with my fingers, and now, no taper on the sides. I BELIEVE that if I took a stretcher and very judiciously gave it a little bit of stretch, I could even get the "bulb" look. The felt is that easy to work. I can work small spots with my fingers, but can't really stretch a larger area simply because I can't hold it and press in all the right areas all at the once. I may give it a shot....

This hat is very much an experiment in progress. I believe I'm gonna have Steve just make me a new beaver hat, and then I won't have to mess with it at all!!! :D

It looks good as a fedora, I think. Great with suit and tie. That's what I've been with my hats more these days, so it caught my eye. For an Indy fedora, specifically, the hat looks too small for your face. An Indy Fedora has to almost be too big for the wearer in terms of proportions of crown and brim.
