I've always wondered why at the end of LC, just before the "Leap of Faith," we see a close up of the fall with no popper.

Was that somehow symbolic of the rundown, exhausted state in which we find the hero?

Anyone got any theories?

I guess you could take it as another example of 'nothing left but to believe'. Like the empty holster.

But that implies that they meant to convey this by removing a small part of the whip as happens w/ use. Kind of esoteric reference, even for these guys, isn't it? It'd take a whipster to even recognize it. (Which I didn't, and now I'll have to go watch it again now that you've mentioned it...)

I'm guessing it just came off at some point and the prop continuity guy didn't catch it.

I was kind of wondering that, too, if the prop guy never caught. It would be interesting if someone could post a screen capture of when HF whips the old man's leg before he goes under the tank tread.

They filmed those two scenes in completely different locations, so it would be useless to draw any conclusions from the tank chase.

But, the whip could be the same one used in both locations.

VP's point (if I may be so bold, and correct me if I over-interpreted) is that you'd have to find the scene that was actually FILMED before the one in question...and considering how many takes there are that end up on cutting room floors, breaktimes, etc., you likely won't find ANY scene that was filmed RIGHT before it.

But Paul's idea could still work if they were actually TRYING to show in continuity that his whip was damaged. I still think that's probably a reach...considering this is a guy whose hat is never lost. (Ironically, reference end of said tank chase, when it even comes BACK.)

Hey what’s all this talks about hats and jackets in here! This is the bullwhip section we don’t talk about hats and jackets here! We talk about plaited works of art that travel upwards of 950 miles per hour – that’s some 1,400 feet per second and create sonic booms that can slice flesh and break bones! Not whether or not those hats where turned a quarter of an inch or that the side buckles where D rings or square… and we certainly don’t talk about using sandpaper and acetone on brand new lambskin! Barbarians! Don’t make me lock this thread down I'll do it I swear don’t push me im close to the edge

Anyways I always just figured the missing popper as a continuity error; I never really gave it much more thought then that im afraid. Interestingly enough though one of the members here has a bullwhip used in the Last Crusade and when he received it didn’t have a popper, we’ve speculated that it might have been that particular bullwhip.

VP, I think you're taking the engineering perspective and being too literal. Think of it as a story, rather than from one country to another. As far as I know, they finished up with the tank, and the rode their horses on over to the canyon.

I'm looking at it from the storyline portion of it. I think it's because it's the end of the trilogy and he's all shagged out. But, it could be that the prop guy missed it.
