how do you do the handle one color and then do the main body of the whip another. I know it is diffrent color of leather I am looking for an answer besides that like how do you transition so that the thong is black and the handle is red. Thanks James

Theres a few ways to do that.
1. Plait the overlay in the normal fashion, and then mark where you are going to put the knots. Bind both of these places with strong thread, and carefully cut into the top layer, just the overlay on the handle section, and remove that section, and then plait over it with another set of strands. If you don't bind it tight enough though with this method, the top of the overlay can come loose possibly.

2. Just plait over the handle section, and cover up the difference with wider turks heads.

3. Cut a set for the overlay the normal way, out of natural tan leather, and plait the handle section the way it will look when finished. Then mark off where the handle will end on the strand set and undo the plaiting. Dye the strands their respective colors, and re plait the handle, and if its done correctly the knots should cover up the color change.

4. Use a smaller handle base, and make the thong larger then the handle, so that you can jut plait over the overlay with another strand set, and the the difference in thickness is not visible.

I think Bernardo wrote that he would dye all the strands before plaiting them up, dying the handle section one color and the lash another color.
So there's no un-plaiting or cutting to be done.

Well,

I was just saying the possible ways of doing it.
Not that you would want to do it that way. I would need to un-plait
and re plait it, with my luck I would end up with red on the very start of the lash. In the case of the cutting, I don't remember, It might have been Paul Nolan that did that for some reason. It might of been more about strand count than anything else...The cutting methods can be done with nylon, so I figured I would post them. I just have bad luck with color related things, being relatively new to whip making,(3 years of on and off) I have to do things like that all the time just to be sure I don't waste a whole set of strands.
