Leather care question

I've noticed that many of the whip makers sell or advise the use of Pecards leather products for their whips. However when I looked at Western Stage Props web page they carry many of these whips but only sell Fiebing's leather care products. Is there a significant difference? I have no experence with either one. Thanks.......Alan

Alan, The main difference between Pecard’s and Fiebings is that Pecard’s is a petroleum based dressing where as Fiebing’s Aussie dressing is tallow based dressing. They both contain bees wax as a main ingredient which is a good thing, Pecards is a little greasier when it’s first applied but they both work about the same. As to which one to use or which product is better, well that is just a matter of personal preference and it depends upon who you ask. Most whipmakers/suppliers will recommend the product they use, so folks like David Morgan and Joe Strain will sell Pecard’s, where as Mark Allen/WSP’s prefers to carry Fiebings leather care products. Many of the Australian and New Zealand based whip makers have there own products too like Jay-el beeswax dressing, Oakwood Leather Conditioner that they swear by. The brand name is less important just as long as your using a good quality hard fat type dressing, to condition your whips and try to stay away from light oils like neat’s-foot oil or mink oil. Either Pecards or Fiebings are both good products though and if properly used both will help to keep your whips in good shape.
