Some old photos

Well, I just ordered my Wested jacket the other day, and got confirmation today. Can't wait to get it (and desperately hoping that it will fit!)
I have a couple of photos for you all. A lot of people think Indy's outfit was unique, but back in the '30's and '40's EVERYBODY dressed like that. Here is a photo of my grandfather in his leather jacket, looks like late '30's. The second photo is of my grandfather in his army uniform. I don't know who the gentleman to the left is, but doesn't his clothing look familiar?

Great pics!
I'll bet you 50 to 1 that jacket the fellow is wearing in the second pic is horsehide. Looks like a highwayman style also.

I love to look at photographs of ordinary people taken in the 1930s. As well as the trim fit of the clothing - look at the fit of the hats. Compare it with the way 'Indy' hats are worn in most of the pictures on the forum. In the majority of 1930s photographs the hats are smaller and they are not pulled so far down the wearers' foreheads. I think the way we wear hats nowadays often makes them seem overlarge by comparison.

That jacket is long gone. My grandfather didn't like old things. He had to have everything new. My grandmother liked old stuff, though. Furniture, milk churns, old Coke trays, and a bit of Carnival glass that my mother has now.
When I watch old movies, the men generally wear their hats "rakishly" cocked to one side. Some men wear their hats "normally", but fashion seems to have dictated that the hat "should" be cocked. It might look good on Fred McMurray, but don't look too good on me! I watched a Spencer Tracey movie not too long ago from 1955. He wore a hat that was rather like Indy's hat. Tall and straight. The ribbon was wide, about 1 3/4". Really good lookin' hat. Of course it looked like it was at least one size too small and he had it sitting on one side of his head, but that's just the way he wore his hat. (kinda reminded me of "Jack"...as in "-in-the-Box"...
)
I don't think I ever saw either of my grandfathers wearing a "proper" hat, but they both always wore a cap high on their heads and cocked off to one side.
