Trouser pleats.

I purchased a pair of original officer's pinks from a local army surplus store. Now, I'm no tailor, but it seems to me that it shouldn't be impossible to add pleats to trousers that have plenty of room to be taken in. Has anyone actually found a tailor that will do this? I was told 'no' by about five different tailors before getting frustrated and giving up.

Do you have any experienced friends willing to give it a shot?

Theoretically, I think it would be possible.

Perhaps you weren't speaking "Greenback"?

As in--Tell the tailor money is no object. THEN see what they are willing to do.

And if that fails, there's always Costume Makers, private Seamstresses, Grandmothers--Do tell us how you got on!

Cheers

It may not be possible in terms of engineering. IE: you just don't have the fabric to do it. It's not purely about taking the pants in, but rather the shape of the various parts of the pants when initially cut.

My dad goes to a tailor for his suits, and the guy's been in the business for some 50 years now. Tailoring -- TRUE tailoring -- is a dying art form. But this guy's got patterns for suits that look like sheets of paper, which he'll use as a template to cut the fabric. It may be that if the "template" needed to make the pants didn't include pleats, there's no way to add them in and have them look and fit right.

Thanks. I suppose it's probably not even worth the trouble. I know that the trousers are the right color, and have the back pocket flaps. The gun belt would probably obscure the existence of pleats anyway. Thanks for all the input. I think I'll leave them be. :?

Yeah, plus, you'd be messing with history! :) Leave 'em be. If you want a pair of trousers, you can try the LL Bean All Weather Wool trousers in taupe for $59!
