Shrink or stretch?

The Stedson Temple I bought is a 7/18, a 57. It's a little small on me but the hatter said it would stretch to fit me perfect but I'm not so sure. the 58 just fell on my head without any grab at all, the hatter said I was inbetween sizes. Will it stretch as he said or should I go get the 58 and shrink it down with water and a lamp? Any advice would be great.

I would get the 58 and just wear it on hot day's ( sweat in it). It should form to the shape of your head. This should work better than water.

I wear a 58 and it's just a tiny bit to big but if I follow the above, it forms to my head just right. I think stretching a 57 would make the hat tapper a bit.

You can check with Fedora and make sure this is correct, but I think it depends on what the sweatband is made of. If it is leather, it will shrink down, if it is some synthetic material, it probably won't shrink.

I looked and I don't believe it's leather. All I know is that I don't see how this band will stretch to fit me head this much. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and get a 58 instead. Also, is rebashing it going to be a pain or no?

Right!!! But if a hat has a synthetic sweatband, the felt is often of a quality that would shrink too. So I'd go with the 58 either way.

If you're caught between sizes, I recommend going with a slightly larger size. You can always put some kind of spacer in the head band to tighten up the fit. I've never had a hat stretch out. Even the best ones seem to contract a little over the years. I think it's just nature of the material.

I'm with Havana on this one.
I, too, have NEVER had a hat get bigger on me....just smaller with natural shrinkage.
