Has Anyone thought of taking off the jacket sleeves?

I was reading the thread about the Allan Q. vest and was wondering if anyone has thought of taking a regular wested jacket and removing the sleeves?
I've been thinking of doing it myself IF I pick up another jacket in '80s fit.
I have a jacket made under the Harley Davidson label that has zip off sleeves and thought the Wested would be a good canidate for that. You could have either a vest or a regular Wested.

Yeah, I think the Raiders jacket would lend itself to that look quite well. Don't know that I would chop up a Wested, though
Maybe Wested would make one that way? might even be a lot cheaper; less leather, less time/effort.

That would be a nice Wested option:

At one point, I seriously considered ordering a Wested without the sleeves or the collar to wear as a summer time vest. But just in time I found a leather safari vest, at Wilson's Leather of all places.

No offense, but I think that would look horrible, you'd have to have some sort of overhang where the zippers go. Just makes me think of Michael Jacksons "Thriller" jacket.

I agree totally with KT regarding the zippers.. But, I think that the vest idea is interesting. I'm invisioning the vest to be the Indy Jacket less the sleeves and Includes the collar stand but no collar... also the pockets would become baggy "cargo" type pockets on the vest, not the normal flat ones. It would be lambskin for summer use.

The answer to this question is no. I bought a Wested for one reason and one reason only. It was the jacket worn by Indiana Jones. Indy's jacket had sleeves and so will mine. There is no reason for me to alter this jacket. For my use, the jacket would be ruined.

You could always get one of his
shooting vests.

Wested will make custom items, especially (I would guess) if it's based on something they already make [Indy Jacket]. They are making me a custom jacket as we speak that is not an Indy Jacket but incorporates many of the same features and is very close to the Indy jacket. There is an extra charge for pattern making but that's to be expected, not sure if that would be necessary with just leaving sleeves off. As for the cost, well the vest would be less leather although not much less... might offset the price though.

I have that bottom vest. My problem with most vests like this is that they are too short.
And with the Adventurebilt:

Rick, that looks great! Very nice indeed. Your Jeep is especially cool too.
You may need a TOD vest

I always though that these vests are for photographers and they have so many pockets that photographers can keep the film rolls.
Removing the sleeves off a wested is not a good idea (unless you are a photographer)

A pocket for your compass, a pocket for your GPS, a pocket for your maps, a pocket for your knife, a pocket for your camera, a pocket for your trail log, a pocket for... you get the idea.

Yea, me too.. then I bought another and another (LOL).. the point is that if you had 1 you loved and an extra (I have one w/ slightly too short sleeves) it might be nice to have the extra made into a vest for summer use, is what I'm thinking. I'd never buy one for the sole purpose of removing the sleeves...gotta have the original first for sure. But this jacket (as a vest) under a vintage wool overcoat might be cool on those days that are too cold for just the jacket and could be worn throughout the summer too, just MHO.

Kinda off topic. Rick that is a great vehicle. I am actually going to purchase one. To me, its the ultimate Indy (modern day) ride.
And now back the the sleeveless westeds....

I was thinking more like the vest worn by Sean Connery in League of Ex. Gentlemen. It is long like a Wested and I recall the sleeves extended beyond the shoulders.

Wested has made shooting vest for years. I was trying to get him to look at the sport over here, as there has been a real resurrgence in clay shooting and skeet, and therefore his vests would be perfect, but I don't think he ever took it any further than our discussions.

Here is a view of the collar detail that I'm looking for on the vest. The lapels and length of the vest eliminate using a Raiders jacket without sleeves.
