I made this one for a collegue of mine, who wanted something non-Indy :?

I need to sew in the liner and the little sweatband bow later today and than he can have it tomorrow.

Let me know your honest opinion please:

It kind of looks like a porkpie/teardrop dent hybrid to me. It's different, but I think I'd have to see it on the guy's head to get an overall opinon. I'd have to get used to the inside crown being taller than the rest of the sides, personally. The craftsmanship is spot on, though!

I hear you Bink! My thoughts exactly. But he wanted as low a crown as possible and still be able to put his head in there...

The guy's THAT shy, he'd be embaressed to see his hat online... So I doub't I'll get him to make pics of him wearing it.

I had started with a COMPLETELY different bow, to sort of make it more sporty (per request), but that was too sporty. Then I made a two colored bow, with one color as seen and the other in the same color as the hat: too much show off. This finally pleased him, so I can finally sew in the liner.

Marc

I really need to see it on someone to get an idea of what it looks like.

You know, Marc, I can see how this is quite a sporty hat. With the right wearer, I bet this looks mighty fine. I think the two colored bow would look sharp on something styled like this, though the customer gets what the customer wants!

Woe. I'm sure the quality is second to none, but I'm not sure of the practicality. I mean the lid looks like it's built to hold water in case it rains and you're stuck in the desert and need to save every drop. Kind of like Humphery Bogart's hat in Treasure of the Sierra Madres only with a wider brim.

A very nice combo, but it's the first time, I've to say that I really don't like the way you've done something!
Just bash it to a normal C-Dent, and would be a great very vintage-looking Fedora with lots of Style. Marc you know my 30s Mallory, which is in the same colors, and which had C-dent, before I rebashed it. I think if you would put the original style of this one on you Non-Indies, it would one of the best bashes for your hats and would still keep the sportish look!

Just my two cents.
But hey, if your pal wants it that way?! Please take it this as criticism, but just as some kind of suggestion

True, but the customer WANTS it this way, and as long as he's happy with it, that's all that matters!

My old Indy hat (allessandria) before my AB now looks just like that. And that was just from distress. The crown eventually tapered bad enough and when I was going to have it reblocked, as I was taking the ribbon off, I slipped and cut the felt so I just decided to rebash it and wear it around the house as a work hat. And believe it or not, most people love it. They say it looks very safari style. I bet this one will look fantastic on the owners head.

Marc,

Although this is not my style of hat, I can see the excellent craftsmanship that I am used to seeing from any of your work.

The ribbon is very nice and the usual great job on the bow. This makes a great Vintage Hat that I would expect to see in a 40 or 50's Film. Or any episode of the Twilight Zone.

Marc,

The customer is always right, BUT he is sadly mistaken if he thinks this hat will look good on him...too bad because the materials and workmanship are excellent.

To be quite fair, this hat could very well look PERFECT on the customer. I've seen hats I thought were perfect but looked bad on one individual, while looking great on another. Despite our personal preferences on hats around here, I refuse to pass judgement on how a hat will look on someone without actually SEEING it on that individual. Folks laugh at the Dorfman, but I've seen folks wear that hat well.

Marc, the craftsmanship looks superb on this hat. Oddly enough, the more I look at it, the less "afraid" I am of it. I think the only thing I would change on this particular hat if it were mine is to make the inside crown and the sides even, instead of the crown rising past the sides.

I put the hat on myself (even though it's two size to big) too take a look in the mirror......and BOY I didn't like what I saw  But, I gave the finished hat to my collegue this morning, he put it on, et voilá: it looked as if he had had the hat for years and that it was just a part of his daily wardrope. For me personally that hat would never work, but as Bink pointed out so well, it works for the owner. What a relief
