I'm new to the bullwhip forum, so forgive me, but I have to ask this... Have you ever attempted to use your whip to swing from a tree limb or the nose of a giant anubis statue... etc...

It's inadvisable. Depending on the quality of your whip, I'd say it's possible (moreso if you're using a steel core whip), but only if it's a life and death situation, as you're most likely going to ruin your whip and make it unusable in the process.

With a good quality whip it is probably going to be possible a few times but you will damage the whip.

Also while it is in theory possible to whip the whip around somethign to swing from - if you then swing across it on this it wil mean it should be impossible to unwhip it again from the other side.

The most realisitic use of the whip swinging is Raiders where Indy swings across and then leaves the whip in place - the only reason he gets it back is because the branch breaks.

What do you mean should be impossible? Have you tried?

It's entirely possible. I used to swing from my old whip constantly when I was a kid. But now at 6' 4" and 250lbs., I don't think I'd ever do it again

People always seem to think the stunt is fake because they don't see how the whip holds itself onto the branch or other object. It doesn't. Your weight does. When you lash the whip to the branch you flick your wrist to the side and lay the last coil OVER the others. The pressure from your weight holds it on there, same principle as those Chinese finger cuff toys. To retrieve it all you do is flip that coil back off of the others and the whip usually just falls off by itself.

I still don't recommend it. Unless you're doing it over flat ground and not a bottomless pit. I always had mixed results doing it when I was younger. I don't even know how many times I fell in the same creek trying to swing over it. Murphy's Law dictates that it works best when you're alone. If you're trying to demonstarte it for someone, you'll end up in the creek.

when i was younger, i did this many times. this was way before last crusade. my whip was a 10 footer from Mexico an looked just like young Indy's. It started fraying at about the 5' area and finally broke there. I naturally took it apart and found the bellies were Mexican newspapers. I remember whipping it around a 2nd story gas release pipe to gain entry up there and almost fainted when I found the newspaper. If you are going to experiment with these things, make a a 'hero' prop out of rapelling rope.regards,hanson.
