I'm making my first roo skin whip

Post by eaglecrow »

I finally started with my first rooskin whip. It is going to become a 4 ft. snakewhip with a round fingerloop and a short chessboard braided handle. A guy who used to be a member here ages ago  shared his knowledge in whips. That made the making much easyer.
it is still under consturuction, here is a picture how it looks right know:

Since I tapered the strands a bit too early I didn't skived them and used no bolster. It has a thick bolster instead. Can't wait to finish it :D

Lookin' good, Breineder! Almost looks to me like your strand length can do a little more than 4 ft. Look forward to seeing pics of the finished product!

I second Jabba's comments. Looking good! Plaiting looks nice and even. Share pics when it's done!

So, I finished my whip today:

Here is my snake...

...the 9ft. Bullwhip pagey made on our whipmaking session...

...and here are both lying together

The whips where made out of the same rooskin batch and with the same plaiting soap, although I look less than pagey did.
It became 4ft long (not included the fall) and a bit thin to the point, but it's still a nice looking, small whip.
I also decided to make a small and round finger (not wrist-) loop so that you easyly can slip through with 2 fingers when holding the whip on the butt knot.
I just attached the fall and it cracks well, but ####, this little whip is pretty fast! I'm used to a 9ft. Paul Stenhouse Bullwhip, this is way different, but I wanted to make a Snakewhip which easyly fits in a gasmask bag.

How do you like the outcome?

oh, and by the way, here are some "making offs"

Hey BreinederIndy, do you really work wearing the hat??? :P

If you stop in Florence be sure you'll carry one of those beauties with you :) ...in case it's too much stuff to bring with you, you can always leave the whip to me :P:P:P :whip:

My compliments Breinder! Very nice. Look to be a couple small weird places in the overlay, but very VERY nice! Kudos to both you and Pagey for the beautiful work!

Short snakewhips are pretty nifty, AND fast. I cracked on of Paul Nolan's 4 foot snakes this past weekend, and WOW! ZOOM! Compared to my 6's and 8's. But those short whips are also A LOT of fun!

Again, nice work, all the best, and keep up the good work!

Sometimes I really do. The hat is actually not mine, it's pageys. I borrowed it for the picture becouse I want to add it to my homepage and I wanted a picture of me sitting in my workshop. And since mine is at Marc's for a reblock ....

Thank you for your kind comments. Since the whips won't be the last one and I need some money (who don't?) I will sell this one on evilbay
