Uhh, yes, what did Indy actually think of his jacket? As an old friend who had been with him for many advetures, or maybe only a piece of leather he really didn't care about? What do you guys think?

Getting philosophical about the jacket? I believe he would rate it second only to his hat in terms of importance. It's part of his field uniform and a beloved garment, custom made to his specs. Putting it on probably makes him feel at home (Anyone know that feeling?). While I don't think he would purposefully abuse it, I don't think he'd treat it gingerly either. It's a piece of field gear and had better be up the challenge. It's going to get beaten up but that doesn't mean it isn't loved. I do believe that he had a variety of similar jackets over the years as certain ones would be lost, stolen, destroyed or shot.

Yes, and he would pick up a new one next time he was in London anyway. ;)

Actually, I disagree. In several of the Indy novels, he mentions how important his whip is to him (he actually vowed never to go on an expedition without it). Here's how I think it breaks down:

1. the hat - almost like an heirloom. It's been with him everywhere, and was given to him by Fedora, the man he came to model himself after

2. the whip - not so much a memento, very useful as a rope. And in the novels, Indy always seems to need it right when he doesn't have it.

3. the jacket - all the reasons the people here have cited. constant companion, been with him a long time, makes him feel at home. :junior: -IJ

A few years ago, someone made up a fake receipt from a leather company and sold it on ebay as an insert for the grail diary. It supposed that Henry Sr. bought the leather jacket while in England circa 1920, and sent it to Indy, who was in college at the time in Chicago. Further sentimental attachment to the jacket.

I have an old motorcycle jacket that I expect I look upon in a way indy looks on his jacket... I thought as soon as I got my Wested I would ditch that 3 year friend for the closet (and I may as I go off to college and get a second wested) but pretty soon I realized just how "at home" I felt in the jacket I'd worn forever. while I'd drag it behind a car and get shot in it, and generally treat it rougher and with less care than any other garment I own (especially the wested), I'd put up just hard a fight, if not harder, to hang on to it... and it'll be a nice addition to my jacket timeline when I'm done with it (up until I stopped growing I got a new "adventure" jacket every year or so and they're all hanging in my closet in chronological order)...
