Found my LC Webley!

Post by Indy45 »

It's not the exact LC screen Webley, but it's mine!

Lucky to find it at a PA gunshow yesterday, great condition. Tracing S/N puts it as 1919 production by Webley in England. Originally .455 caliber, it had the back of the cylinder cut to chamber 45acps on half or full moon clips.

To be accurate, as others have posted, the Webley(ies) in LC were most likely Webley-Green Army models with the curved grips. But this Mk VI with the full grips, in my opinion, is much better looking and handling.

Looking at the LC DVD again, there is a clear shot of the back of the cylinder (when Indy checks for ammo to shoot at the German fighter), and markings like "618" are clear, so that screen gun was not cut for 45acp. Yet other accounts say the screen gun was cut to chamber 45s.

Odd thing is, my Mk VI is cut for 45s, but DOES NOT chamber 1980s era 5in1 blanks as the overall length of the blanks stick out front of the cylinder; the gun won't cock (index the cylinder) without difficulty. (I've also found that in original HE2 .455 S&Ws, the 5in1s also have trouble as the rim of the case is about .010 too thick for the cylinder to close.) I'm beginning to think  all these Indy wheel guns used .455 blanks...

PS: Also got good news at the show, my gunsmith is making good progress on my S&W Bapty conversion...

Beautiful! I don't see a pit or a nick on that thing! Must have been kept by a little old lady in Pasadena, who only shot it on Sundays.

All,

Thanks for the kind words! Didn't want to reply until I had more to report.

Went to the range today, annual Memorial Day gun club target shoot with our M1 Garands and various handguns. I took the Indy revolvers, the Webley MkVI 6inch and the S&W 1917 5.5 inch.

Webley, as I reported on Dr. Tyrees post, didn't shoot original .455 ammo unless barrel was tipped up to seat cartridges closer to firing pin. The .455s also shot high and left at 25 yards. Group was 5 me and 5 ShortRound45, so rules out operator error...

Image

The Webley seemed to like the 45acps in full or half moon clips just fine, felt recoil was same. Shot high, but group was centered:

The S&W 1917 shot 45acps high and a little tighter. Maybe it's me, but I get better groups with semiautos. Incidently, the Garands were a blast, at 100 yards, once sighted in, I was shooting groups better than the targets above with the original WWII iron peep sights. 8 bangs and a Ting!

PS: To all Veterans on the board, thank you for your service.
PPS: IndyTaz - NEVER wet; calm, cool, collected!
PPSS: Dr.Tyree - Hey post some pics of YOUR Webley!

Thats pretty good shooting! When it comes to vintage fire arms only the Shadow knows why they shoot the way they do. :D

May I ask what you spent on your MK VI. I looked at one at a gun shop today that was also modified for .45ACP. Asking price was 675.00, I have a trade in that'll help bring it down some but it's a dead ringer for your peice.
