I know a lot of you have been waiting for this so... Here it is, the Temple of Doom Dinner Jacket:

I'm hoping to be adding the matching vest and pants in the near future as well.

I don't think the ToD jacket had satin lapels :?

by Indy Magnoli
It sure did:

I know this isn't a great picture, but you can clearly see the gloss of the lapels in contrast to the rest of the jacket. And I think that the flash of my camera has over-accentuated the satin on my jacket.

Kind regards,
Indy

Yeah, I was under the impression that it was just a regular white tuxedo jacket.

It's still a great looking jacket though.

Yea, I agree Tone, I don't see satin either.

Well, besides what Ford was really wearing in that scene ... what would be accurate for the era?

I guess satin, right?

Posted: Tue May 02, 2006 4:36 pm
by Indy Magnoli
I believe both ways would be period accurate. And, yes, it can be made either way... so everyone is happy! ;)

Kind regards,
Indy

That's an interesting question, Jens. I have seen satin used on black dinner jackets of the era, but I've never come across that treatment on a white jacket of the era.

Okay, I just did a little google searching and came up with this:
http://www.hillesodesigns.com/images/alternatuxwht1.jpg

It's a new one, though, and not official vintage.

LINK
This one's from the 60's, but not the 30's...

It makes sense that they could have put satin collars on white dinner jackets in the 30's. Why not? But in my years of collecting vintage clothing, I haven't come across one from that era yet. They could be out there, but not that common. The pics I linked to, however, show a real contrast in the material. I would think Indy's jacket would be dead obvious if it were satin. I don't think it was, but Magnoli's jacket still looks great.

EDIT: Tag fixed. Thanks, VP.

Yes, I noticed the jacket has plain buttons. But, again, these jackets can be made either way. Bespoke clothes are wonderful that way! ;)

Magnoli

Wait a second. Isn't Willie wearing his jacket and pants from the club during the plane scene and through some of the forest stuff? If there was satin on the jacket then it should show up in those scenes too wouldn't it?

I've updated my site now, so the jacket can be ordered with or without satin lapels in white, cream or black. I've also dropped the price to $315 with satin lapels and only $275 without satin lapels. Shipping is included.

Kind regards,
Indy

Oh wow! I plan on ordering, but need the vest and trousers as well... I'll be keeping my eyes open! Nicely done once again, Indy M.! Er, was Indy's dinner jacket cream or white??

Posted: Tue May 02, 2006 10:35 pm
by Indy Magnoli
I believe his jacket was cream. Look at the above photos and compare the jacket to the color of his white shirt.

If you want to get the pants and vest made, I may be able to give you a special price as "guinea pig". ;) PM me for details.

Kind regards,
Indy

Just curious - why are you guys making a distinction between tuxedo and dinner jacket? A tux is a formal attire which includes a dinner jacket, pants and waistcoat (or the barbaric cummerbund). Traditionally, a DJ has satin lapels that correspond with the satin ribbons on the trouser legs.

Nice jacket, Mr. Magnoli!

The color for a screen accurate TOD dinner jacket is:

IVORY

Check the color difference between his white shirt and the dinner jacket.

Its close enough for my taste, if I were to guess as to screen accuracy I'd go with non-satin, but I think the satin would look very cool with a satin white bowtie I have (and white pants and an eye patch... if only one of my eyes didn't work... :c)

And a white Persian cat? And a shaved head?? And a scheme to rule the world by taking control of a nuclear weapon, which you'll stash in the Caribbean, after you "eliminate" a certain British secret agent?? Sorry, I got carried away!

I just watched the Club Obi Wan scene last night after reading this post and they are satin lapels for the TOD jacket. I'm sure the high shine in the photograph is a result of the camera flash.

I would lean toward purchasing this jacket from Indy M. for several reasons; the main two are the peaked lapels and the wool blend. I’ve been to a dozen formal rental places looking for a peaked lapel in ivory and wool. ( Never thought to ask for functional cuff buttons.) Everyone just shakes his head.

Tough to find even on @bay.

Toss in screen accuracy, he's a COW member, and
starting a business. Having one of these custom made elsewhere was around $650

And... here is the complete Shanghai Tuxedo:

You can see that this one was made with the lapels the same material as the jacket:

The three-piece tux is only $499 (shipping included). More info on this tux and its components can be found at my site:

That ... suit ... looks ... awesome! Now I want one of those. Tony, you are sooo cruel! Do you know how much an Archaeologist earns? And I mean us "office-and-excavation-Arcghaeologists", not those tomb raiding ones.

Dang, I've got to sell ... something, anything.

Great idea to open your "Clothiers" business. Thanks. :? :D

That is a nice Tux rifht there! On top of that, it is affordable. $500.00 for a tux isn't bad, that's usually how much just the jacket goes for. Good deal there! Just might be next year's Prom Tux.

The dinner jacket had satin lapels! They weren't very shiny, but they were there. Maybe Magnoli post some other pics of the dinner jacket with lapel to make sure they aren't as shiny as they appear in the first pic!

Well, if you would "find" some valuable artifacts for some museums you could do some extra cash.
Or do you think Indy´s tuxedo was just rented?

One day I will have the money for one of these dinner jackets. I have always wanted a white dinner jacket and seeing TOD just reinforced it.

####, If only I hadn't just spent all that money on other Indy gear. Eh, I'll get it anyway, I can always make it back later. (I've been saving all my money from x-mas's and birthdays past until I got old enough to buy more expensive stuff instead of spending it :D) Hmm, If I hurry, I can have it in time for Finger Lakes :-k

Magnoli, what is the other part of the wool blend in the Shanghai Tuxedo jacket?

Posted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 4:13 pm
by Indy Magnoli
The fabric is a composite of Alpaca Wool (60%), Nightwist Wool (30%) and the rest (10%) is synthetic.

Magnoli
