I'm new to the whip section, so I'll qualify my question by saying that I know absolutely nothing about whips. Zero. If you laugh at my question, that's the reason why. Here goes:

Is a whip really strong enough to support the weight of a man, as Indy used it to swing over the pit in RotLA, and again in LC when he rescued his father?

Well, every single whip you saw that was used for swinging, climbing, being dragged by a truck, were all made special for this purpose. The reason? Stunt guys don't want to get hurt. So they made whips with "steel cable" cores, with a braided leather overlay.

I wouldn't recommend swinging, climbing, getting dragged by truck with any whip. They really were not designed for that purpose, other than to be cracked. If you don't die, or get seriously injured, your several hundred dollar investment in the whip would surely be just a bunch of leather on a stick. Just my .02.

I think that it would support the weight of a man, probably not someone like Andre the Giant or William 'The Refrigerator' Perry. It will also stretch out quite nicely, and never return to the original shape. If you weigh 100#, it probably won't disturb it too much, but, 200# and up, figure that you'll get to do it once, and it will be forever changed.

My opinion, but I have never swung from a whip, and would never do it, either.

PS. DM told me that he didn't supply any special whips for these movies, so they were more than likely made by someone else. Sergei?

Yep, that is true. David did not make them, it was someone in the prop department.

I've never seen any behind-the-scenes info on the movies, but wouldn't the stuntmen have also been wearing harnesses for the swings and dragging?

Only in the movies, I have read posts by others whom saw somthing on the big screen and tried it. Keep your whip for whipping.
