Can anyone suggest an Alden-esque shoe?

I need a new pair of brown dress shoes and I thought it might be fun to get something in the Indy boot style (but in a shoe, not a boot), and cheaper then the 405s (1 pair of nearly $300 shoes is enough for one man's wardrobe if you ask me). Searching the forums for 'shoe' wasn't very helpful. Can someone point me to old forum posts, or make a suggestion?

I hope this gets you started, even if it's not exactly what you had in mind.

I do indeed and I like them very much. They are very comfortable and they look great. I got mine for $40 and you can too, if you keep an eye on their sale section online.
They come with two pairs of laces: flimsy brown leather and bright yellow cord. My brown leather laces broke and I now have the yellowish cord laces in there. I know I can buy other laces, but I just haven't gotten around to it.
They also have excellent tread.

Those could be exactly what I'm looking for in a shoe. Does anyone know if size 10H-M means 10 1/2?

try the Caroline Huskers. I have them and love them. They are very afordable too, and still very strong. They scuff up nicely too, if ur looking for that worn in look, they are very soft after wearing them for a month everyday. I love them because they are closer to the hieight of the aldens, and they ahve the flat sole like the aldens. The only thing i would say is slighty differnt is that the top of the toe is a bit more round but thats due to the steal toe, which is great for in the field and kicking nazi mechanics in the face. All aroudn they are a great comfortable boot. They are a darker brown than the pictiure shows, ull love them, if not u can return them for free, there is no shipping on these babies, whats there to lose????

I just got a pair of aldens after having the carolina huskers for about a year, And the huskers are really a great shoe that will take alot of abuse, you can pecard them and they wil look as good as new or you can go into some ankle deep mud and they still look great!

Got my pair in the mail last week and I was impressed with the styling and comfort so I threw on a normal pair of socks and headed out on with friends. Big mistake! They're going to be great shoes once I break them in. I developed a nasty blister which I'm waiting to heal before I go back to breaking in my new Insy-esque shoes. <grin>

I wear a Hilfiger shoe (that looks a lot like that J. Crew deal), but I'm not sure they make them anymore. I got mine for $60 and they were regularly double the price. NASTY to break in though. I'm thinkin' those J. Crew ones are kinda nice.

Update: I've had my J. Crew Duxbury Ruggeds about 5-6 months now and they've broken in very well. I wore them almost every day weekday this summer, though I'm switching back to my Aldens now that its getting cooler. I'd definitely recommend them, though it seems they're sold out.
