Guys,

I ordered the el-cheapo POS whip (8ft 4 plait) and it arrived today in the mail. I know a lot of you would opt for the IOAB or Little Raiders as your first whip but this was what I could afford for the moment. Besides I'm not gonna crack it or anything... I don't have a lawn and I'm not really keen to use it outdoors. So it'll probably be for display only.

Problem is this: the whip's color is natural tan... it looks too light. I know the Indy whip is supposed to be whiskey in color... anyway I can darken up this whip, and if so, what should I use? Suggestions are appreciated.

How does it look compared with this?



I was looking at the temple sequence and in every shot it looked a different colour from this to quite a dark brown, it really depends on your reference shot.

Brown shoe polish (the real stuff in the flat tin) will too to darken the whip down if you are going to use it for display.

Btw have a go at cracking it, it's loads of fun and not a little bit addictive!

The color is kinda similar to this one:


But the popper is white.

If you wanna darken it, exposing it to sunlight frequently will do it.

That's the exact same whip I got except the color is lighter, almost orange-y.

The only mod I've made so far is cut off that horrible looking whip holder with MEXICO emblazoned on it, and replaced it with a dark brown braided one I made myself (from all those friendship bands experience ) and trim the fall which was a bit wide to begin with. I'll try to post pics later. With all the good lookin whips shown in this thread, its kinda embarassing to post pics of my "POS".

hey man that was the first whip i got as well, but it was the dark brown, 8 foot 12 plait. It worked well for circus cracks since it was light and didnt want to come back and wack me, but anything else was really hard for me. Good luck with ur POS

So, if you end up with a 'POS', are you 'SOL'?

Heh... let's see if I can mod it to look better... if not, I may be SOL'ed enough to contemplate getting one of your IOABs!

I don't know how I missed that thread ( pics) about your new whip. The IOAB whip is a huge jump over that whip. You will be very happy with one of Adam's IOAB whups.

I kind of laughed when I seen the thread topic. I’d have to guess that "POS" is a not so subtle way of saying these “less expensive” whips are not made with the highest level of craftsmanship or use the best materials. That they are designed to be a souvenir wall hanger rather then a working whip. While you can crack them, they usually start to fall apart pretty quickly.

Kalkamel, I wouldn’t worry too much about changing the color of your whip. My call would just be to leave it as is. Indy’s bullwhips ranged from natural tan to dark brown anyway it just depended on the scene. Who ever makes those whips, doesn’t exactly use the highest quality leather so Whether or not it darkens up in sunlight remains to be seen. Some leather dressing wouldn’t hurt and may darken it a little, either way i would probably do the leather some good; those whips are usually very dried out.

If you’re feeling bold, there are products available to stain or dye leather. It is a gamble though. Depending on the leather use and the way it was tanned and sealed, dyes or stains may not properly take and you could end up with a mess. It’s not something I would recommend, however If you do decide to go that route, it’s a do it at your own risk sort of thing and there’s no guarantee that the color won’t rub off or bleed out. My advice would just be save your money and go with an IOAB bullwhip or equivalent, i dont think you would be dissapointed.

I tried leaving as it is... left it under the sun for three days, but it still had that darn orange color. So armed with a bottle of Dylon brown leather dye and a brush, I went to town on it. I brushed the brown dye unevenly onto the whip, coz I didn't really want it to look like a POS, just so that it looked darker and used. Here is the result:



I had earlier cut off that horrible looking whip holder strap that had MEXICO stamped on it and replaced it with a braided leather bracelet ( ). It looks more acceptable to me now. What do you guys think?

Kalkamel, I’ve defiantly seen a lot worse. Looks like you did a good job darkening it up. As long as your happy with it, that’s what counts! Be careful placing it on any cloth surfaces for a while though just to make sure the dye doesn’t transfer over. All the best.

Hey looks good Kalkamel, I should have mentioned, it takes a lot longer than three days in the sun for the darking effect to set in, , I was thinking in terms of cracking, the old swivel handled whip I have started out as a redish brown, after about a month of cracking it in the sun and the rain, it pretty much turned black .


By the looks of your whip, it looks like it should pop nicely, do you plan on cracking her later on after the dye sets in.

And, even as a mexican, I have to agree: you did the right thing on cutting the whipholer with MEXICO stamped on it. I can't understand why most of our handicrafts tend to be "cheapened" when they stamp the name of the country in letters so big. Looks so tacky!!



BTW, where in Mexico did you get it? I would like to get one and, for the first time, save on shipping expenses!!
