UPDATE: Magnoli Satchel v2

I have dubbed my replica of the bag the MG-VII... too corny?

Here are the specs:

material: soft cotton canvas
color: olive-brown drab with a washed out finish
hardware: nickel plated brass rings, cast zinc alloy side disk (from an original), nickel plated drain holes
interior: pockets based on MK-VII

...and the pictures:

Now, I've done a run of these and will likely not do another one from the same manufacturer for some time. The run is complete, so these can't be modified in any way. As they are (without the strap) they are $25 each. Shipping is $5 anywhere via airmail.

I am working on the straps right now. I'm hoping to have them finished in a few weeks. They will be offered in two types of leather, a dark, slightly glossy brown and a dull, aged-finished brown. These straps will be offered with the bags and seperately. I'll post news here.

One question; you say it's soft cotton canvas...does this mean it is made of material softer/thinner than a typical original MKVII?

In any case, I can't wait to see them with the straps.

It may be a tad thinner (it's quite hard to tell) but it is definitely softer than an original WWII era bag.

I'm pricing out buckles at the moment (which will most likely be custom cast), but I'm estimating the straps to be about $25-30 (plus s/h). So the entire bag/strap combo will probably be $55 (plus s/h).

From my experience, the origial bags varried quite a bit in the weight of the fabric used. I've had some fairly heavy weight bags and some very soft and thin.

Nice work, can you bung one in the washing machine on a hot wash to see how it holds up please?

My original came through unscathed minus 60 years of grime! (Don't call it patina! lol).

My WPG repro, reverse tapered in the same wash!

All the unissued MK Vlls I have handled (a lot over the years) have been in heavy, stiff jute canvas. The Mk Vl is in a lighter more flexible fabric. It's getting harder to find unissued MK Vls in UK, but MK Vlls are still very common in stores.

That's funny, because the two MKVI's I have are stiffer than the MKVII I have. Of course, that's the one I've been carrying around for years, so it may have just softened up through use.

The bag looks nice.. there is something weird about the top part but we have to remember it's just a MKVII-close-enough

What are you thinking looks wierd, erri? It looks good all the way round to me. Heck, he's even got the original divider inside the bag! As for the snaps, it's been discussed that there are two or three variants of the snap buttons on vintage bags.

As for the side disk, I removed one from an original back and had them cast in a zinc alloy.

Well if you let me go back on topic... try to understand me now... the "flap" of the bag usually looks wider than in the first Magnoli picture.. it tends to cover the brass rings usually. Although this feature in Magnoli's bags might be only good since in the original MKVIIs it tends to make the top flat wrinkle for that reason.

I just compared the picture with my bag and the flap seems pretty spot on. Of course, as you use your bag, it won't look so "ironed," but snapping the flap closed and holding it up like in the picture, I find my strap rings aren't really covered by the flap. I would think that if the rings were covered by the flap when closed, that the bag wouldn't hang as comfortably. It's also a bit different in that we're comparing a new bag to something likely broken in.

The straps are now made but the buckles aren't... so at least you can see what options I'm planning on.

The top one is a rougher looking "faded" brown while the lower strap is a nicer looking burgundy-brown. Both have grooves and have sealed edges.

Here is a front and back of the prototype strap (the grooves are slightly different then the final version and the edges are unfinished):

My production straps are outside at the moment and it's raining, so this picture will have to do. In any case the back is the same basic colour as the front.

I'm hoping the whole set will be available in about three weeks.

I agree with Erri that the top flap looks slightly different. Only to my eye, the diagnal corners are cut off too far from the side and bottom of the flap. The flap itself looks slightly too short; but heck, I've only seen one bag in person (my own), so I'm no expert.

The straps are a hair under 1/8" thick (making them about a 7-8oz leather).

Does anyone know how that compares to the Texas Action Gear strap? I bought one of those, but was disappointed at how light it was. I always use it for a while, but end up using my Noel Howard strap again even if it will bleed on my shirt sometimes. The NH strap just feels more substantial.
The grain looks beautiful on those straps- they look really supple.

The press studs are convex, but not rough textured as on some originals. The snaps are the same as those on two other original bags I have though.

They come standard at 70" open, but about 68" after the hardware has been added. They can be easily shortened from there by request.

Good news and bad news for those waiting on my new run of satchels: there has been another delay and these won't be ready to ship until mid-December.

The good news is that this run will be better than the last. I am now using a heavier cotton (a 16oz canvas) that will be much closer to a period bag. The o-rings will not be split as before and will be darker (like tarnished steel). The bottom vents are now brass. Here are some photos:
