What do you folks wear for a summer hat?
Last year I wore a Tilley. I thought I might try a felt this year, but don't know the protocol. I was told it was straw after Easter?

my Adventurebilt or nothing at all

Believe it or not my head keeps fresh under the florentinan sun when wearing a fedora. The only not comfortable thing maybe is the forehead sweating but it's not to hassling for me

My protocol is a felt hat 365 days per year. Never give in to fashion. Be true to yourself. Wear what you want.

Well spoken! Personally I would miss my Fedora and the only occasins I don't wear it is while climbing and sailing in the summer (it's way too windy, and I don't want to jump into the water behind the hat every now and then ), under the shower (taper! ) and (sometimes) while sleeping.

But who will be able to tell? Plus, at my age, losing my hair will not be premature...

My grandfather whose in his late 70's has a great head of hair and claims its because he never wore hats, but I still wear mine on any non-special occasions (and on any of those said occasions where I CAN where a hat...)

I keep a handkerchief in the back pocket to wipe my brow though if it’s hot...

Wearing hats causes hair loss
In order for the hair to fall out, the hat would have to be so tight that it cuts circulation to the follicles. So no, wearing hats does not cause hair loss. Could you just imagine how many pro sports players would be bald if that were the case?

I can think of other area of my body that have clothes touching them that have no shortage of hair.

I'm wearing my fedora.

I have a panema monticristi from Optimo I break out in the summertime along with my other fedoras. It's a great summer lid.

Personally, I think tilleys are awful. I wore one last summer and got more bad looks than a fat 70-year-old man in a speedo .
I generally used to wear a cap, but I'm looking forward to a fedora full-time now. And I asked my barber about hair loss and he said it wasn't related to hats at all.

I am considering a future Panama purchase though...

I am with Minnesota, nothing beats a Panama hat in summer. They are stylish, light and breathe very well. In the Golden Era, every gentleman had a straw summer hat or Panama.

I have worn fur felt in the jungle many times, mostly just for pictures here at COW! I would prefer to wear a Panama in the extreme heat. You can wear fur felt, but it is miserable. I have soaked mine in rivers to alleviate the heat, but it only goes so far when the temperature is above 100 F and the humidity is high.

I would order an Adventurebilt in the lightest weight felt Fedora has, if I lived in Florida or somewhere else hot. Maybe, I'll do that.

I keep praying for that lightweight felt to get into Fedora's hands. A high end summer weight felt fedora has been the Holy Grail that I've been seeking for decades now....

Absolutely, Michaelson, it fills a hole in the hat-wardrobe: something light enough for summer, but still fur felt.

see now my grandpa was the exact opposite in his 80's full head of hair and never leaves the house (even just to get the mail) without putting on one of his hats. heck thats actually where i got the habit from lol

I have a straw hat for dressy summer occassions but otherwise wear felt hats all year. Most of mine do have the small vent holes which do help. You haven't really bonded with a hat until you've sweated in it.

I agree that I'm looking forward to Fedora's lightweight felt offering. It'd be great for my travels to warmer climates this summer. I have a beater hat which I picked up for the sake of learning how to take one aprt and put it together again. The felt is incredibly lightweight (maybe even lighter than your Optimo, agent5) and it would be perfect for summer wear! Other than that, break out your Belloq gear and don the panama.

My 'summer weight' hat was that Borsalino you found for me, bink, but it's been up and down the road so many times, I really don't want to harm it any further with the perspiration that comes with the summer heat....so I, too, am EAGERLY awaiting Fedora's lightweight felt before our heat hits this year!

Just to put the record straight a trichologist friend of mine explained that wearing a hat out doors all the time decreases hairloss, as one of the major causes [other than male pattern baldness] is sunburn and wind rash.

Anyway it was just a joke, for the record

I have a sunbody palm straw cowboy/fedora that I styled myself from the open crown. I love felt hats but I can't stand the heat in the summer time. Plus, I'm on a boat or in the water all the time in the summer (one of the advantages of teaching high school...summers off ) No felt hat would want to be wet (and in salt water to boot) ALL the time. Back to the felt in the fall.

on the archæological scale of things that's 'recent'

Fur felt year round. It gets in the upper 90s farenheit and rediculously high humidity here in Miami and I still feel fine in a fur felt all summer. I only do a straw hat when going to the beach or on a boat.
