OK Newbies, listen up! Here's a blast from the past. Who can tell me what the new hat is that I'm wearing?
I'm in the process of rebuilding it from the ground up.
Winner gets a drink next time we meet.

Looks real vintage looking. Great find!! You gonna do the dimensional cut? Regards, Fedora

An old Akubra Bushman or Drover?

by Dalexs
Nope, nope, nope, close, nope, nope (in no particular order!)

No dimensional cut. 3" brim all around. slight pinch.
Not bashed for an Indy Hat look. more vintage style.
I'm still working on the brim.

I decided I like the wider brims as of late. My Akubra Fed Deluxe has
a wide brim and I'm really liking it.

Keep trying!

As I said over at the FL, I think you got RIT dye remover and redyed the fedora, perhaps an Akubra. But if I really had to guess maybe a Vintage Silouettes. Nice hat though.

I don't know, I already said a fedora. What is it, a baseball cap with ear flaps? A pith helmet with no stiffener? A skull cap with a brim? A western style doo rag? A racing helmet with a rain guard? A dog house with a storm flap? A tweed cap with a golf umbrella? A trucker's cap with mud flaps? A fishing cap with sunscreen? #-o

Nobody has guessed Peters Bros ... I'll guess a Kangaroo colored Peters Bros.

For some reason, just by looking at the felt, it looks more like beaver felt. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it looks to me. :junior: -IJ

It looks real nice whatever it is.
To me, it looks like a Miller. But I am terrible at these games.

Aw, HJ. That's too bad. I can help you guess. You want me to slip you a few answers? :-k

Ok ok, I've led you guys on long enough.
I'm actually very impressed with the responses but only one person here guessed it.

Mola Ram guessed BCF special. He is correct. Do a search in the archives for the references.

The hat is in fact a $12 cheapo from Burlington Coat Factory.
They used to carry them on a regular basis in the winter, and suddenly stopped.
I happened into one recently and found this.

I've always wanted to see juts how nice I could make it.
My last few attempts on these hats weren't that successful.

The felt is very thick. The brim was 3 1/2 inches.
I tore out the sweatband (or what they call a sweatband) and reblocked it.
I pounced the entire hat with some 200 grit sandpaper to take the thickness down a bit, and finished it with 600 grit.
The ribbon is some 1 7/8" that Fedora sent me a while back.

So even a 12 buck hat can look pretty good!

Adam, I owe you a drink at theFingerlakes summit!

Good guessing folks!

Dalexs,

You've done some nice work on that thing! I never would have thought it was a BCF, and for only 12 bucks!

Well done!

Cheers
Craig

Good looking hat! Is it Czech felt, or does it say? Fedora

Even if it isn't bashed to look like Indy, the front pinch has some Temple of Doom action going on there.

I thought they were all Czech felt, Fedora. Was there another source? :-s

I got to see two at the Knoxville Burlington CF store when they were introduced, but unfortunately they were to small, and no more were ordered, so I missed out on picking one up. For the price, I was quite impressed.

Hey Dalexs, which BCF did you go to?

I REALLY like that color. If you ever get bored with it, I'm a 7 1/8....

I always thought those BCF hats were pretty good, especially for that price. Every once in awhile I am shocked to find things there. I remember seven years ago all I saw were 100% wool felt pieces of junk, and then, one day, there are a whole shelf full of fur felts. I was always interested to get one, I see it paid off for you.

Oh yeah... hello again. Personal issues have kept me away... oh yeah that and BOTH my power machines completely failed on me to thanks to the overrated firefox.

Too bad, I think the actual size was a medium before I reblocked it up to a 7 1/2. Sorry.

And yes, I do recall the tag saying it was Czech Republic.
(I think I may have said Costa Rica, yeah, right...)

The BCF is a new one in Revere, MA Rick. About 3 miles from my house.
The day they opened last year, I went pilaging thru their hat collection.
And like Dan said, most of the time, the stuff was cheap wool stuff. But every so often...
I've been on lookout for a while. But they stopped stocking them sometime last year. I just happened to stop by and saw it.

Glad you guys like it. It's proof positive that every cloud has a silve lining...
(or something cliche along thoses lines!)

I wish I had remembered to photograph it just off the block though, it had real Hoss Cartwright look going. Color and all!

Oh, not that I know of. I just recalled working two of those up when some of the folks first bought them. I did not know whether this chain store was still using the Czech felt, or not. Regards, Fedora

Ah, ok. I thought I had missed something. :D

As far as I know, BCF only had these hats in the stores that one winter, then that was it....at least that's how it was here in Tennessee. :?

Here are my BCF Tonaks. $12 bucks ea. for the brown ones, $16 for the black one, and it has a wind trolley, liner, and leather sweat. In order of quality of the rabbit felt hats I own, the Tonaks would be the finest felt quality, followed by Miller, then Akubra and PBBM Borsalino. Image Plus Fedora, they have a directory of "semi finished" hat bodies at their site.

3thoubucks, do you have an address for the BCF site? I tried a search but the site I found had no hats at all :(

Their site didn't advertise these hats 3 years ago when they were selling them.

I don't ever recall seeing these on the site. I remember when the BCF thing came around, I checked out all available sources including their website. Notal of the stores had them. and the website never had them.
